Sadly, windows is the option - widest customer base = wider support base = wider range of available software cheaply / freely / easily.

To be honest it depends what you are going to use if for?

If your going to be wanting to play games, you'd be better off with a Windows based machine, however if it's for Internet use, movie editing etc.. you'd be just as well off with a mac.

Having said that these day's you can get something called BootCamp which allows you to run Windows XP on a Intel based Mac (although eventually you'll find OSX to be the nicer OS and rarely use Windows Very Happy )

Personally i would say go with windows. If you want alot of bang for your buck under a grand i would check out:
www.shopacer.co.uk.
I bought my laptop from there and got so much for the price i paid, good quality to. They seem to retail about £100 under what other manufactuers make for the same spec.
Hope that helps

Erm these days the Mac vs Windows debate is over!

Considering now an Intel Mac can run Windows, I'd go for one of them, cos you have the best of both worlds.

Can boot in to Mac OS X for internety stuff, and Windows for games. And at the moment the Macbooks are very good value compared so similarly spec'd Windows only machines, plus you get more style with a Mac in my opinion.

Plus when you come to sell a Mac when you want to upgrade they're still worth alot!
And I use the older Powerbook Pismo G3's as an Example, they're still going for £200+ and for up to an 8 year old laptop that ain't half bad!

No you will need a piece of software such as boot camp or parallels. I recommend parallels.

Bootcamp is free though, its in beta but free for the moment.

AFAIK Bootcamp will be part of the upcoming release of Leopard (the next release of Mac OS X version 10.5).

That's true, but the problem with Bootcamp is that you either boot into osx or windows. With Parallels, you can run xp (or anything, linux etc) in a window or full screen in osx. (It's not slow either!!)

Your right about leopard essentially having bootcamp built in but again it will be a full switch between operating systems.

Parallels can also be found *free* on the net, cough cough wink wink!

No-one uses macs other than poncy "new media" types and their relatives.

Get a cheap windoze PC, install a *nix distro and dual-boot with windoze as your second boot option.
