Cover Songs

listening to the radio a lot lately, naturally

and have had my hatred of cover songs re-kindled, i've always (generally, there are exceptions) been of the opinion that either write it yourself or fuck off, just because you can sing doesnt mean that you should..apart from in your own living room

recently ronan keating has covered the goo goo dolls - iris, and its terrible, and just empty. the original rocked, has a bit of grit and gravel to his voice and it sounds good, ronans is just boy band choir boy clean shite, and yet its played twice a day on radio 2, magic and virgin. a whiff of the original every few days just to remind people what it should sound like, but ultimately ruined (yet another) good song for me, as everytime i hear the original, i will be reminded of the lame covers

opinions?

as mentioned there are exceptions personally, and you could probly go (but what about, and what about... and i'd probly concede that they are acceptable, but rarely better than the original, again some are but very few)

generally i'd like to rid the world of 'artists' like will young who make a fortune from singing other peoples music with his mincy voice (incidentally, if i hear a mention of him, then immediately i switch stations, i just cant cope with it)

I don't mind covers if the coveree (? Is that a word? ) brings something of themselves to the song, does something to make it their own.

I agree that vapid, second rate, empty attempts to cash in on someone else's talent should be banned though. Or possibly tortured, slowly.

Tell you what else bugs me, these people (mostly rap artists) who take either a sample or re-record someone else's tune then change the words to it and claim it as an original, there's one getting played all the time at the moment (some screechy woman) that sets my teeth on edge each time I hear it.

Once again, if you're going to do that, do it with some style.

I know its not a well know song. And its a Hardcore tune, but

Ultrabeat taking Elysium by scott Brown, which was an Anthem for me in 2002 has been took and added some god awful Commercial dance type lyrics to it.

Bit like Flip & Fill taking shooting star and slowing it down making it sound turd.

I agree with Jon regarding Marilyn Manson's covers...they're wicked! Yes it was Soft Cell/Marc Almond - the original...

I liked it when I was out at a Hard House night and they played Nirvana (Teen Spirit), Prodigy (Voodoo People) and a Led Zepplin song and made them sound awesome.

I think some talented musicians/DJ's can make some tunes sound wicked...

Thinking in particular to one album Spawn - metal fiddled by DJ's, superb sounds!

I heard a Radiohead cover of Pink Floyds Wish You Were Here and it was disgraceful, would put you off radiodead (liked their older stuff better than the newer crap, hence the name).. anyway they murdered it, suppose if anyone tries to cover it they can only murder it.
