Ive done around 15 miles on it and it seems to be running quite hot. Im assuming this is because its air cooled?

Gsxrmick - what should the top speed be roughly? Does 65 sound about right?

Been anywhere nice on it?

65mph seems ok maybe a little higher if tuned and balanced, not going to break any records with a 30 year old bike.

Hi

Mid 80s should be the real top speed. Mind you, the speedo on my old 400 wet dream used to under rear (friend clocked me at 105 when I had 88 on the clocks, says something about both superdream and GS550 clocks).

I would suggest you stick some new tyres on it. At that age they are likely to be badly hardened.

All the best

Keith

Ive mainly been hunting around for insurance so i can take it down to be MOT'ed and in turn taxed. No further progress really. I run it most evenings and its definately settling down. Things like the idle speed was quite random to start with but its improved greatly with a few "re-running in" miles under its belt.

Kickstart- Yes the tyres are quite hardened. The rear locks fairly easily and leaves a dirty great black line on the road. not good.....

just got to hope the MOT goes well. It may not be over yet!
To be honest i think it will fail. The tyres should be changed, if they pass then the MOT scheme is a sham. The frame has some rust, the MOT guide says it should be fine as long as its not affecting the integrity of the metal - i cant tell but id say its only surface rust. The emissions may be out, it smells wierd (technical wording) but cant pin point what its like! I dont think there is a fail for smelling wierd but it doesnt seem 'right'.

Let us know how the MOT goes, would be interresting to find out whats causing that 'wierd' smell as well.

Would it not be an idea to change the tyres before hand if you know it will fail the MOT or are you going to get them to do the work.

i dont know they are going to fail but it wouldnt surprise me. Im going to use the mot test sheet as a guide of what to concentrate my effort on next rather than spending money in one area of the bike only for it to fail on a different one!

I somehow dont think it will be affected during the mot by any emissions!

Hi

No emissions test for bikes so no need to worry about that. Frame rust would need to be very serious to fail (although front mudguard corrosion would be a fairly common failure cause as they rotted in about 10 minutes). That leaves the tyres, and you might get away with those if there is no visable damage (would still change them before riding to the MOT station).

All the best

Keith

The bike is looking nice although i would have been tempted to drop everything off and get the frame shot blasted and powder coated.

Also, instead of using wire wool i would have got myself a polishing kit that fits on the end of a drill. That way you don't up with all the tiny scratches that wire wool will be putting in your shiny bits...

Looking good though and let up know how the mot goes. Very Happy

MOT should be done some time this week. I didnt get round to doing it and then the fazer came along needing some work and an MOT too. I'll probably book the dream and the fazer in on the same day and me and my dad can run them across to be done.

Will update once done.
