I had a 250 dream as my first road bike at 17 in 1980. That was on an 's' plate.
I found it to be an excellent bike and went all over the place on it. They aren't the fastest thing to ride but the comfort is superb.

Keep listening to the cam-chain though as they were renowned for stretchig and snapping. Be sure to have it serviced and replaced before it has a chance to snap as this does a lot of damage when it happens. ( No I don't have experience of this happening.)

Mine used to clock about 97mph which in reality would be substatially less as the clocks weren't that accurate.

It didn't originate from Nottinghamshire did it?

My registration was XRB 36 S

Best of luck with the bike.

Update.

Dreams chugging along. probably done around 500 miles. Dads taken over control of the bike now its running again and wont let me strip & rebuild it. Spoil sport.
Thanks for the advice re. cam chain, its quite rattly so a check-up may be in order.
Bikes from Essex. Was new to first owner from southend then sold on to a guy in wickford who then swapped it with my dad for an old 50cc moped thing as the licencing rule changes came in and the previous owner couldnt ride it anymore.

Those old dream and superdream motors don't have the best camchain tensioner design the world has ever seen. They have a tendency to stick and not maintian the correct load on the chain. If the engine is a bit rattly and running hot, take off the cam cover and try shoving the top of the tensioner blade down with a screwdriver. It may well make a significant difference.

A mate had one of these and the pipes were glowing red at idle before the tensioner was set properly.

Its worth balancing the carbs as well, they are prolly miles out if it isnt idling well.

It should be able to get to 85-90 without too much difficulty, and just over a ton if you have enough road and can tuck in enough.
