Thanks all.
The projector lights certainly aren't the best bit of the design, but I can see what they've done in order to make the front end look like a race fairing. I've lived with one of these before and I don't even really notice the headlights. By contrast, the LED running light strips really do work aesthetically, especially at night.
As a whole, I think the 60th Anniversary is by a long way the best colour scheme for these yet (R1M included). But that's just a bonus. It's all about the chassis and the engine!
Thanks to a superb afternoon/evening, this one is now bug splattered and dirty. |

I quite like those hidden lights on the R1. The nose looks all track bikey ____________________ CBR600 F3 FV

I do have both, and I've done a good amount of road mileage on both bikes (probably 30k on SP1/2s, and 6k on the 2015/16 R1).
In many respects the R1 is several generations better, and significantly so. It's much more powerful, it's a bit lighter, it has extensive electronics, and the chassis feels much more nimble. All of that adds up to it being outright faster, and easier to ride fast.
But in many ways the two bikes are similar: Riding position, seat, geometry, wheelbase, suspension, throttle response. The drive from both engines is similar, and there's probably an equivalent level of braking power. Both are at the extreme end of the production superbike scale in their respective generations. There's nothing on either bike that isn't there for performance, other than the minimum required to make them road legal. Engineering, materials and build quality on both is pretty much as good as it gets, and IMO the Yamaha stands out amongst it's current peers in that respect.
So, despite the different engine configurations, and different manufacturers, I like both because they're characteristically quite similar. Neither is comfortable or practical, both are a bit raw and intimidating, and it's always an experience to ride either. The Yamaha is faster, but the SP-2 is probably (just about) the more rewarding to ride. |

Nice.
So that one is the 900 with a few cosmetic tweaks? What year, looks clean?
I quite fancy a Thruxton R for my advancing years. Ohlins/Showa USDs and Brembos look good. ____________________ stinkwheel: He had an animated .gif of a cat performing fellatio. It's not socially acceptable. It can have real life adverse effects on other people. |

690 SMC-R? Would love one as a second bike, but could never have one as just my sole bike as most my friends ride super sports 600/1000's so i'd have no one to play with on ride outs. Such a gorgeous bike though, love the look and sound. |

Yep, just the 900 with a few tweaks (custom "ox blood" saddle, paint job, Ace café decals and special edition handlebar plaque - obviously very important). I'll swap out the exhausts at some stage but pretty happy with it otherwise.
It's a 2014 and had less than 200 miles on her when I got my grubby little hands on it. Previous owner lived in Japan so it was just stored in his garage over here.
Love the Thruxton R as well but it was just a wee bit pricy for me. I also don't like the thought of another ride by wire bike so soon after the fiasco with my Scout so that ruled out any of the new Bonnies ____________________ Story so far: RV125 VanVan > SV650 > Indian Scout > Triumph Thruxton, SV650 (again) & CG125
