Somewhere by the side of the road between Nuremberg and Frankfurt. Nice place to sit and enjoy the sunshine for a little while!

Interesting.
Considering that you're used to some relatively quick bikes, why the 500?

I'm guessing a commuter. Some of us ride all year no matter what the weather you know.

What socket said!

I needed something that could manage 60mpg+, still feel somewhat like a supersports in terms of riding position and be moderately tuned. 8000 mile service intervals mean that I change oil every 6 months. Everything is accessible and pretty cheap.

I wanted something that had 120/160 section tyres, because i could bag myself some seriously good pair deals on dunlop roadsmarts and BT023, considering that it's solely going to be a motorway muncher.

I didn't want to put 16000 miles a year on the R1 when it's morphing into a track bike. And besides, being able to do 98mph in first can spell trouble when I'm hammering up and down the M5, so the 500 was a very good way of getting economy and artificially restricting myself on top speed.

Because I didn't opt for relocation, work are paying for my mileage for 3 years, so technically, it's a free bike.

It only cost me another £80 to put this bike on top of the R1 for insurance with unlimited mileage.

I tried the NC700/750 and hated the riding position. I hated the power delivery, and it was pretty heavy. The CB500X felt unnatural to me. Everything about the front end felt wrong. I got no feedback from the front end whatsoever. But the CBR felt more familiar. It's funny because the chassis is virtually the same, aside from maybe a few mm on the wheelbase and a fraction of a degree on the head angle.

I could do with getting aftermarket clip ons because the rise on the bars is bit too much for me. I'd want to have my weight slightly further forward, working the front end a bit more.

Funnily enough, both the R1 and CBR500 cost me £4250 to buy!

New exhaust fitted and test ridden. Sounds much nicer than stock! Also looks like a trumpet.
