I was commuting to work today on my CG...

Coming down a straight 40 limit road doing about 35/40... When the red lights came on at the traffic lights about 50 metres ahead...

Gently applied both brakes as it was raining... The back end locked up and slid about 30 METRES... snaking wildly behind me, wouldn't even regain grip when I let the back brake off...

Finally did regain grip 30 metres later the bars shaking left/right violently... That's when I thought "Fucking hell, I'm actually coming off"... but the bars stopped and I managed to regain control and stop the bike...

It took me past the red lights... past the pedestrian crossing markers and I stopped about a metre short of a busy crossroads...

Promptly pulled the bike up and had a look at the back tyre... Didn't seem to be anything on it... Didn't notice any diesel either... What the fuck? Could that just be a greasy road? Noticed last night in my GF's car that when she put her wipers on it left greasy streaks on the windshield.

Guy on a bandit in the left hand lane didn't even check to see if I was ok... Knobber...

How's the wear on the rear brake shoes?

When they get very worn, the brake cam can go over-centre and lock the brake on. It has happened to me before with one of my CB125s which have the same brake drum as the CG.

Road tar? , the bitumen they use to seal up re surfaced bits after the telephone co or something dig holes? (9 out of 10 are done poorly and not up to standard) ,

New road surface ? ,the government have started to use thin resurfacing which is cheaper than normal , what happens is a machine comes and lays the surface and buggers off , no steam roller , so that the stones in the road stick out a bit more (it relies of car wheels to push in the stones and bed them in) and hence per cm2 there is a smaller contact patch , since CGs have small contact patches anyway yours was smaller.

since your tyres are made from concrete (ie TobyR's magic tyre) its even worse,

or minor aqua planing , which happened to me once , but that said it was a HUGE puddle disguisng a huge pot hole which I went into and almost came off.

Glad everything ended up ok Toby

I can do one better than that however Smile

I was coming down park lane months ago at about 50, the lights turn red, i go to grab the front brake, the lever comes all the way to the bar, and i see the front brake pad go flying off into the central reservation like a spent bullet casing. Had to scrub of speed with the rear, lucky i fitted a goodrich hose to it Razz... and lucky i was ahead of most of the traffic so even though i couldent stop in time for the red i, like you went sailing past the line, but thankfully there was nothing else around.... Something to be said for winning the traffic light GP Smile...

Scary shit either way, yours Coulda have been any number of things, graeasy road, oil, was it wet? did you get a bvit lairy on the brakes?

The road in question is Menlove avenue in Liverpool... However most roads around the Speke area keep pretty soaked in diesel.

Thanks for the replies...

As soon as I got past the 20 metre mark and the bars started shaking I thought I was fucked... As the crossroads are used by buses belting it down... Would've been hit by a lorry if I didn't regain grip LOL.

Oh well Very Happy

I'll check wear tonight stink. Thanks.

No, you would have had to jump off, I know someone who had to do that. No time to break, jump, feck the bike.

some dodgie acdents, although, iv'e got a story that will whip sll yo asses, its about my dad about 15 years ago on his bmw 500...dad nearly lost his life...

he was late a few times to work and if he was late again he would of been sacked, (he was only late looking after my mum as i was in her stomach)

so he woke up one day, got dressed and had breakfast, as you do, when time to leave came, went to start the car, just wouldn't start, and he couldn't risk it as my dads money was the only income at that time,

so as the car wouldn't start, and he HAD to get to work, he took the uninsured, no MOT or tax bmw 500, so he got out of the villae and into cardiff, and he was going down a road at about 60, and a police car done a U turn in a non-U turn space, so as she pulled out in this unmarked car, he hit it side on, the bike went into the door, he flung over the top, arial stuck in his back and came out his frond, and was ripped back out, as he was flying over the car, hit the road, at about 50 and just most of his bones broke,

a broken lag, fractured other leg, hip, jaw and colar bone was broke, one knee kap split, had to have a metal shoulder put in as it got completely crushed, 3 fingers chopped off, well it was 2 - 3 and they were sowen back on but he has no nervs in them

and the arial most of all, MISSED every single artery, lungs, heart, all that, just straight in, and the good bit is

he still has that arial today

and when my mum told me that story 4 years ago when i was 9, i cried,

because im so lucky that my dads alive, hes 56 now, but hes healthy, so im just over the moon my dads still alve, other wise, i would of never of seen him

Nick

Just because there on bikes, doesn't mean they will stop. Noticed that when half my bike was laying in the road. Rolling Eyes

I keep locking the wheels on the Bandit, don't trust them sort of bikes in the rain.

So you're the one who managed to lock up for 30 metres, run a red light and go straight through a pedestrian crossing on red, and the Bandit 600 rider who somehow managed to stop ok is the nobber? How does that one work Laughing

What were you doing when it was amber, scratching your bollocks and admiring the view?

I'm just glad I practise locking the rear wheel on gravel... So I knew how to handle it when it happened.. Did shit myself tho.

I told the police, and they're getting the council to come out and take a look at the road surface.

Saw this on another forum:

I was commuting to work today on my Bandit...

Coming down a straight 40 limit road doing about 35/40 passing a learner on a CG... When the red lights came on at the traffic lights about 50 metres ahead...

All of a sudden his back end locked up and slid about 30 METRES... snaking wildly behind him...

Finally when he did regain grip his bars started shaking left/right violently... That's when I thought "Fucking hell, he's actually coming off"... but the bars stopped and he managed to regain control and stop the bike...

It took him past the red lights... past the pedestrian crossing markers and he stopped about a metre short of a busy crossroads...

He promptly pulled the bike up and had a look at the back tyre... Didn't seem to be anything on it... Didn't notice any diesel either... What the fuck? Didn't see any grease on the road.

I looked over at him (along with everyone else on the road) but he didn't bother giving me a thumbs up or down... Knobber...

Glad you're OK Smile

Scariest thing I guess to happen to me was riding through a narrow country lane, come to a blind corner and Mr White Van Man 2006 comes flying around the corner - I was centimetres away from being thrown into a bush to avoid him. By the time I had steadied myself he was gone.

Christ that scared the crap out of me, it was all over in less than a second yet you'd be surprised how quickly you can brown your pants Sad

Breaks are like PCs great when theyre workin but shit house when theyre not.

Had an incident in this 64 mercedes Id brought to run around in a few years back. Heavy as a tank and stopped about as well, but did stop .

However one day I was heading out to a mates 21st and heading to the lights the pedal went straight to the floor and it didnt wanna slow down any. SO grabbed the hand brake to pull it up just shy of a red light.

Any way I turned around and my my mother asked why I was home so early, Since Id only been gone 30 mintues.
I told her the brakes went on the merc on the main road and you'll never fuckin believe it, she says to me .................." oh yeah they went on it yesterday while I was out"
Didnt think to farkin tell me though did she.

Oh well alls good that ends good.
