unlocking phones (probably a stupid question...)

is it done via a piece of software and plugging the phone in or do you need an external piece of hardware to unlock a phone? Is their any software available to unlock phones so I don't have to buy a new sim card, does it cost much to get it done at a mobile phone shop (if they'll even do it atall)?

the unlocking solution all depends on the model of phone.
some are cable some are codes etc

What's the phone? An old Nokia for example I can do for you in 30 seconds, it's a very simple piece of software. But others are much harder. 3 phones are impossible to unlock.

gimpy its usally £10 where im from, but it might be higher/lower in your area

the A1000 needs either a smartclip or victorgsm to unlock it (unless theres a SW solution now...been out the loop for a while) so youll be better taking it to your local market for unlocking.
