My girlfriend was supposed to start her second year of uni in September this year. She registered for student accommodation at Forster Hall in Bradford. After the results came out she found that she couldn't stay at uni this year, but is still left with the room. Has anyone had any similar experience or can anyone give some advice as to what we can do about the contract?

She's been told she needs to find someone to take over the room, which isn't going to be easy. If she can't do that, then they say she has to pay for it anyway. There are also bits in the contract that say she'll have to pay council tax as a non-student.

I can't find anything in the contract about cancelling the tenancy :s But I've never dealt with anything like this and feel a bit over my head.

Anyone got any ideas? Could cost a fortune.

Rick.

Erk, never heard that one before... Confused

Get loads of notices up NOW in the SU and around the area. Make sure everyone in the corridor/flat area she was due to be living in know that it is available as they are likely to have a friend who would want to live near them.

i would have thought she could give 30days notice and then leave so the most she should have to pay would be 1 months rent i would have thought.

But the university does tend to be the worst landlord so they might somehow have a more devilish contract than the usual tenancy agreement.

Citizens Advice Bureau may be able to help.

Can she not repeat a year and stay at uni ? I did that, and got a degree in the end which is better than dropping out and having nothing in my opinion.

Ive just been in the same situation as i just failed me first year.
I cancelled my accomodation before the 1st august "cut off date", only thing i lost was £100 of the deposit. They told me i could wait untill the day before the moving in date although then id lose all the deposit.

If you're not a full time student you're responsible for council tax, yes.

Get posters and internet posts up everywhere now, if she can't find anyone to replace her then she'll be responsible for a lorra money I imagine.

Hi,

she will only be liable for full council tax if living there. Different councils have different rules but usually 6 months free then half tax if not a residence

Regards
Charlotte

Thanks for the help guys Thumbs Up

She put up adverts for it straight away and going off what I heard today it sounds like she's already found someone. Hopefully that'll be the end of it.

I can't believe how much these student accommodation people get away with. It's a massive rip off.

Rick.
