Just shows - you should shave your pussy! Bald is the way to go and it will certainly sort out your flea problem.

Frontline, ask your vet. You can get either a spray or a spot-on. The fleas that invade my house every 6 months or so when it runs out seem to be pretty much resistant to anything else these days.

Also, wash as much of their bedding as you can in a hot wash and use a household spray on carpets, rugs, bedding etc. I think the one I have is Advantage, I know it's one I got from the vet rather than the supermarket.

One other tip, worm them at the same time. Thumbs Up

Your pouring your money down the drain if you buy pet store/super market products such as Bob Martin.. Only veterinary products have the license to include the ingrediant that kills fleas.

Advantage should have killed them.

If it hasn't then there could be a number of reasons:

1) They aren't fleas or aren't cat/dog fleas (centopholedes felis/canis). I have seen cats come home with rabbit fleas on before, these tend to live round the edge of their ears and are much bigger than cat fleas.

If you aren't sure, catch some of the offending creatures on a bit of sticky tape, stick it to a piece of white paper and take it to your vets. They should be able to identify them for you. (especially if the stuff you bought off them isn't working).

Or scan them in at high resolution and I'll have a crack at it. Laughing

2) There is another reservoir of infestation. This would mean that the fleas on the cat are already dying when you see them (because of the advantage) but the animal is constantly being re-infested. If you have any other dogs or cats in the house, make sure you are treating those too.

There can be odd corners where the animal goes that may be hotching with fleas, fleas breed outside at this time of year. If it is going out at night, there is every possability it is coming into contact with other cats that could be lifting.

I usually use frontline on them but advantage should be equally as effective. I then do the house with a spray containing two compounds. Pyrethrin: which kills any adult fleas. Methoprene: which is an insect growth regulator that prevents the flea eggs in the carpet/bedding from hatching out.

The pyrethrin only acts for about 24h. The methoprene lasts up to 12 months.

I would combine this with either washing the animals bedding in a good hot wash or replacing it and having a damned good hoover round (especially upholstery and the corners of the rooms.

get your kitten a flea and tick collar, they last 5 months and are brilliant.

in the mean time go to a pharmacy and get soem tablets, which you take one a day to stop the littl ebuggers bitting you.

by removing all sources of food in the house for the fleas you break the life cycle and remove the problem.

Unfortunatly getting fleas/worms/ticks is part or having an outdoor cat. as they mix with other cats which mix with foxes/hedgehogs etc and become flea riddled.

Welcome to responsible pet ownership, I'd get insurance now - most policies pay towards regular flea and tick treatment.

dont spend moey on frontline - it's toss, or atleast it is for our dogs.

£3 flea/tick collar works wayyy better.

depending on how old your kitten is, the collars may be unsuitable though.. so check on the packaging before shouting at me.

Best place for a flea collar is in your hoover bag.

20 years ago, flea collars were effective because they contained organophosphates. They also had side effects (some of which were quite nasty).

They just contain pyrethrins these days which aren't all that effective.

I've never seen an insurance policy that covers flea treatment, maybe there's one out there but I've never seen it.

Frontline does work. It will kill any cat or dog fleas on your cat for 4 weeks after application within 24 hours of them jumping on. It is a Prescription only medicine and as such has been subjected to the most stringent of testing and double blind control studies as to its effectiveness. If it isn't working either it has been used incorrectly or there is a large reservoir of fleas in the environment causing constant re-infestation.

Thumbs Up I second this
And, I am no vet Laughing

Flea collars aren't worth sh*t, and can do some damage
When my cat Beavis was about 1-2 years old, I put a flea collar on him
We got bitten to smithereens by fleas, and Beavis lost all the fur round his neck in a line as a result
He is still bald there to this day
He had the collar on 2 days
(This was a normal flea collar, in date, and for his age/size)

Now, I tend to use Frontline
(although, contrary to what others have said I have used Bob Martin sometimes, and it has worked fully)
We have only one room carpeted downstairs, the rest get mopped etc...
The pets are not allowed upstairs at all Exclamation
A definite no-no in my books

I have 2 cats and a big dog, so I have to be careful where fleas/ticks are concerned
If I didn't keep things in check our house would be rife Exclamation

We have not had any major fleas since starting Frontline etc.. which was about 8 years ago
About once a year we get a tiny break through where one of us will get bitten a couple of times (usually my OH) Twisted Evil
So then I will up the cleaning, flea treatments and give the house a little spray
It's usually just the odd random lonely flea having a picnic-for-one though

I cannot understand why Advantage did NOT work on the fleas for you !
It should have had some results, especially as you did lots of other eradication things too

Fleas are such a nightmare, and I sympathise !!
Not nice
And having a child, I know on the rare occasion when she has been bitten, having to send her to school, in a skirt, with the odd bite on the ankle
Looks bad, and I felt guilty as hell !
But it is rare now, thank God

Good luck with it And !

Well I can't speak for cats and flea collars but they work well on our dogs, they dont come in our house at all.

We've never had a cat as dad dispises them ever since he caugfht ringworm off one, they're treated as virmin on our farm.

Best cure for fleas on dogs was sheep dip - but now were all out Shocked.

Organophosphates again. Work brilliantly, have side effects. It's when the dog starts frothing at the mouth, having uncontrolled seizures then goes into respiratory arrest that you wonder if it was all such a good idea. Brought more than one dog back from the dead with a just in time jab of atropine

You can use ivomec too, but not on collie dogs (it can kill collies due to an abnormality in their brains).

The best course of treatment is a 10 gallon drum of petrol - optimax is a safe bet - soak the kitten and all your soft furnishings in the fuel and light with a match - stand back and be amazed - no more fleas.

enjoy sitting, walking, eating and sleeping on floorboards. Mr. Green

This was yeeears ago and the dogs were just dipped with the sheep, as were many collie dogs I assume in deepest darkest wales.

we have springers and irish water spaniels... the latter certainly have brain issues Laughing

We once had a kitten come in that had been OD'ed with Nuvan Top (another of the nasty & obsolete OP's).
The poor little bastard was bouncing off the walls of the kennel when stimulated (noises etc) and was it due to the acetlycholinesterase inhibitor properties of the spray.

It made a full recovery, but it was heartbreaking (yet strangely amusing) to see it twitching and banging around the steel until the atropine took effect.

I find it disturbing that I found it inappropriately entertaining. Confused

We use the Frontline Combi stuff, not cheap, but does the job.

Just needed to get the monster jabs, wormed, more frontline and microchipped.

My bank is crying!

Ps. Cat's REALLY hate being Microchipped!
