Well take the eye patch off and you'll be able to see where you're going Laughing

probably , but the daily commute on the bike has taken the buzz and thrill factor from biking of late , so I'm looking for a surrogate BASE jumping might be though..

To find a suitable school near you, go to the BPA website and select "Dropzones" from the top of the page. Click on the drop zone nearest to you on the map and you will be given details on how to contact the drop zone.

As with seemingly everything else in life, there is a slow but cheap-ish way to get your license (normal RAPS course) and a fast bust expensive way to get your license (AFF). If you can afford the basic cost of an AFF course (+- £1200) then that is the best route to take (I have done two of the bloody things myself).

If you just want to find out whether you will like it or not, you can either do a tandem jump or just a level 1 AFF jump (depending on whether your chosen school offers this option). Both options are expensive with the level 1 AFF jump being the most expensive, but this option also provides you with the best possible experience on which to make your decision.

I don't consider myself a skydiver, but rather just someone who has their 'A' license and occasionally feels like jumping out of a plane (might come in handy in a situation where snakes are on my plane and Sam Jackson is on holiday !). However if you need any further information, just let me know.

I used to watch my dad Skydive. he did his course in Cyprus.

He said the hardest Jump is always the 2nd jump. Because thats the jump where you pack your own parrachute for the first time! Laughing

Apparently you can just stuff it in the backpack though and it will still deploy correctly. The folding method is just a safety measure I think.

I did my freefall up in Hibaldstow in the north east with a company called Target Skysports, was really great fun and the instructors are mental.

My AFF course starts next year and costs about 1300 for the 8 jumps, I think you can get it all filmed for an extra 100 or so which is well worth IMO.

Check out https://www.skydiving.co.uk/ for the details.

Not sure there's any hard and fast rule on that. I packed my own chute for my first jump simply because the weather prevented us from jumping on the Saturday so they taught us how to pack, to alleviate the boredom. Weather was perfect on the sunday and I chose to take the chute I'd packed myself rather than one packed by another amateur. One of the experts checked each stage of the packing process though to make sure we were doing them properly; last thing you want is to look up and see a streamer whilst hurtling towards the ground! My jumps were out of Headcorn in Kent, many years ago now. I'd never flown before so the buzz was fantastic.

Base jumping is a different ball game altogether; you generally need to have dozens of freefalls under your belt before taking that step.

Exactly the same here. Six static line jumps. The last three were dummy pulls and I was about to start moving on to opening my own chute when I met a girl and stopped going.

All training and jumps were with the Army Parachute Association at Netheravon. Really good training and excellent value because it’s all military.

No it isn't and no you don't. You just jump, count to five and pull the string. How about the first guy who ever parachuted? Did somebody say to him "Er, excuse me, you can't do that until you've done it." Laughing Wink

Technically you are correct in that any fool can go and buy a rig and jump off a suitable object to perform a BASE jump. However, realistically anyone who doesn't have a reasonable amount of experience and trys this is going to end up dead.

BASE jumping is very different from normal skydiving in the way your chute is setup and packed. In order to know what these differences are and why they are made, you need to have a fair bit of experience. Not only this but considering the tiny amount of time you have to react to problems in a BASE jump (you are very unlikely to wait 5 seconds before deploying), you need experience to allow you react to these problems as quickly as possible.

Also, people no longer "pull a string" in skydiving and haven't done so for a while.

Correct; resulting in the slightly amended acronym Bones And Shit Everywhere Smile

No BASE jumper would want to know you unless you had the necessary experience and grounding Laughing An unqualified jumper coming to his end is bad news for that jumper but also v bad news for the BASE jumping community; it brings unwanted attention to the sport and a security clampdown on illegal sites, which often prevents other jumpers using them in future.

BASE jumping is different to skydiving in many ways - dead air exits, canopy control in tight spaces and landing accuracy are a few examples but you still need to be a proficient skydiver before you can take that significant extra step.

I'm sure people get a lot out of the sport but it's probably one of the last things I'd volunteer to do.

I done a skydive a while ago and I didn't find it was as much of a buzz as I thought it would be. Confused I would say that pinning my bike in first gear is a bigger buzz by far.
