What does refurbished actually mean in reference to Ipods?

Generally it will mean someone bought it and something broke, so Apple fix it and re-sell it. If it's got the same warranty as normal it's a good way to buy, although it might have some very slight cosmetic faults as well.

My iPod broke after 6 months so they sent me a refurbished one. It lasted about 2 years before the touch wheel died, so not too bad.

it means end of line or over stock items.
like for examply if dixons bought 20,000 ipods but only sold 18,000...apple would offer them a rebate and buy the remaining units back then they would sell them as refurbs as its against the law in the UK to sell it as new again.

not necessaryily broken repaired items but most will come with some level of warranty.
