hey yall,
sorry if this sounds abit stupid but i have a 2006 hornet 600 and the manual is pretty vague as far as showing you things like the fuel reserve tap, does it have one or does it magically switch over via witchcraft? Twisted Evil
I've looked in the obvious places but it doesn't seem to be anywhere Neutral

Tanks (couldn't resist) for your help guys.

It should be on the left by your knee when riding.

Arrow Down for on
Arrow Pointing to the 9 o'clock position for off
Arrow Turned as far clockwise as you can for reserve

Do they still make Hornet's in 2006 with a reserve tap? My God, you'd have thought they'd have got round to fitting a low fuel indicator at least, if not a guage!

yeah it's got a gauge but i just had a good look at the side of it and nothing, is there such a thing as an automatic reserve switch that does the deed when low on fuel?

Yes, there is such thing as an automatic reserve.

When you get to reserve the guage will flash if its a digi guage.

If there was a reserve tap it would be by your knee, or somewhere around the base of your tank!

If it's got a guage (or even a low-fuel light) then it won't have a formal reserve. The reserve is just the bit of petrol left in the tank after the low fuel warning light comes on or the LCD guage starts to flash - you don't have to do anything to make it work.

Reserve taps are on bikes without lights/guages. When you feel the bike cutting out because it's empty, you turn the tap and use the reserve (to get to a petrol station).

I think I experienced this today as the bike starte to loose power and then cut out, after a few turns and with the tap to reserve the bike fired and went home. Never had the bottle to run the tank down before, was a bit of an accident Embarassed

Happened to me on my test as I was going round a 4 lane roundabout (the instructor had told me not to worry, there was plenty of fuel in the tank before I started).

i got that on my nsr some years ago along the a406 near finchley, it just sputtered and then cut out, i coasted it into a side road, cursed and tried to start again, it went for about quarter of a mile and did the same thinking that i had a problem i had to phone a mate from work who had a van, we threw it into the back by then i was well p%*sed off, 1130 at night too Crying or Very sad

i took it to the shop and they said it was running fine and that they just put fuel in it Embarassed
But then this was about 6 years ago when i knew nothing about bikes.

Not much has changed unfortunately Rolling Eyes

It's about 20-25 miles. Info here, lots of other good info on Hornets at www.hondahornet.co.uk too

Quote:
What about the tank range?

Unfortunately, Hornets built between 1998 and 2003 have small tanks that only hold 16 Litres of fuel.
Riding normally you can expect to be switching to reserve after 96 to 100 miles.
Once on reserve you have an average of around 22 miles left in the tank.

Hornets built from 2003 onwards have a larger tank holding 17 litres. (including 3.3 litres from reserve).

Nice choice in bike Thumbs Up

Just fill up about every 100 miles.
If the light starts coming on fill up ASAP.
You should get at least 15-20 miles after it first starts flashing.

No Fuel tap on an '06 hornet.

LCD Fuel gauge flashes when you get low.

It's all about knowing roughly what mileage you'll get from a full tank and then adjusting it in your head to the riding you've been doing.

I can average 130 from a full tank, but if I know I've been caning it a fair bit that can drop quite a bit, but usually I'll fill up when my trip is reading just over 110 (I make a point of resetting that EVERY time I fill up).

Some bikes have both a reserve tap and a fuel gauge. My XJ1100 had gauge, warning light and reserve taps (2 fuel taps on those).

Ok so hands-up here talking old-timers) who has ran their bike onto reserve, filled it up and forgotten to switch it back to on, then ran it out a few days later thinking they were running onto reserve only to find they had a bone dry tank?

I know I did it a few times in my youth Very Happy

The only time that happened was after being out for a ride with a friend who has old bikes.
The last 5 miles home we swapped bikes and put in garage.
He was used to turning fuel tap off after every ride and I didn't spot him fiddling with tap.

Only found out a few days later he'd actually turned it on reserve - so when I started splutering about 10 miles from a filling station, went for reserve but discovered it was already turned there - Bollox!

A trick if you do run low is get off and tilt bike one way then the other.
You can likely get a bit more juice down the pipe from the corners of the tank and get you another 2 or 3 miles hopefully.
Thats what I did and fortunately there was a 3 mile downhill section I just coasted with engine off - made it ro garage on fumes I think.
