What’s the history of the bike?
We will need more details, what’s the mileage, any odd sounds etc?

26000 miles w reg . recent oil and spark plug change.

when the bikes cold with no or little choke it knocks pretty badly..almost as though on one cylinder. same as when you are in a car and going too slow in 4th gear...

it just seems noisy in 1st with no real acceleration....

may just be me having got used to the bike now after 2 yrs on cg125 when i first got on the er5 i thought it was seriousily fast so perhaps ive just got used to it now.

The ER-5 will get to around 40mph in first gear in approximately 2 seconds, if yours doesn't then there is indeed something up.

When mine did something similar, I took at look at the spark plugs, and one was cracked, it is essential they are placed in all the way, and also check the airbox and inlet manifolds for leaks or some some stuff. Good idea to spray the whole thing liberally with WD40 and check the throttle for slackness.

Could be the carbs.

Did you change the filter as well?

It shouldnt knock when cold. Can you feel the knocking if you touch the side of the engine when its running? If you can it may be your Big end is Duff. Has it always been like that does it knock when its under labour in higher gears?

Mine does this, takes full choke to warm up, but in my case it is running way lean, try taking out the spark plug caps and report back with what they look like.

Get your carbs checked, pilot jet adjustments will affect low end as well as poor balancing will make it idle rough.

fitted a new air filter about 2 weeks ago...the engine seems ok when warmed up with regards to the knocking.

one thing that may be causing the failt is the plugs. i renewed them when i serviced the bike but there was a lot of crud in the crevises when i took the old ones out... i tried to clean the area up but didnt get it really clean... i thought i may have pick4ed up some shit when putting in the new plugs but would have thought it would burn away so i left it...

cheers for the advice so far guys....and btw it wont hit 40 in 2 secs in first.....just get a lot of engine noise and very little acceleration........until i am in second and obout 5000 revs the acceleration is shite....

cheers

Take it in for a service. My bike felt like a different bike (in a much better way) after its 15K service (major service), only cost me about £130 and he spent hours on it (not main dealer, back street bloke).

Can't remember to be honest obviously normal things like oil, air, but valve clearences, fork oil etc and a full strip down. I remember him complaining about it afterwards, it took him all day, he was complaining what a pain it was to do.

I had a similar problem and I fixed it by changing the spark plug caps and draining the cabs. Made the mistake of taking a carb apart so need to get them balanced.
