PostPosted: 16:00 - 29 Aug 2006    Post subject: Gear lever jammed Reply with quote

Few times i have noticed my gear lever wont go up from 1st through neutral to second gear as it get stuck in neutral. I have had to pull over a few times to sort it out. Feels like its about to break as does a loud noise. Dosnt do it in any other gear but 1st to 2nd.

Why is this?

Dodgy linkage? I think it was stinkwheel who had a gearbox linkage where the end of a lever had rounded off causing dodgy gear changes, so he just squared it off before adjusting the linkage. I think that was on his KLE.

Other than that, it may be dodgy internals.

IIRC, lifan models are licensed honda designs. If so, it may be worth seeing if the honda it's modelled after has any similar issues.

Sounds like it could be a dodgy selector fork or shaft, quite a bit of work. Worth having a good look over the linkage first though.

Before anything else just check that your clutch cable is correctly adjusted.

FWIW I sometimes have problems going from 1st to 2nd if I have too many revs. I also need to be very 'positive' with the gear selection. That's being very firm with the selection without actually kicking it in and not being too lazy, making sure the clutch lever is all the way back Shocked Wink

One thing to check....

I had just swapped the Divvy's exhaust over and was out for a spin. My gear shift had previously but only very occasionally seemed to stick solid and not move unless I put some weight on it.

I was cruising along in 5th towards a roundabout and found that the bike would not shift gear at all, up or down. Pulled over and tried wiggling the shifter, stamping on it and generally kicking the side of the gearbox but no joy. managed to get her moving and limped home in 5th (and a fowl mood)... Evil or Very Mad

Mrs. K. reminded me that I had taken out breakdown cover so called for a "Bike aware" recovery guy who came out, wiggled the shifter and told me the gearbox had seized. Not best pleased I arranged for a garage the next day and called out a 2nd guy with a flatbed to take the bike to the garage. He took one look and said, "do you want this recovered or I could fix it in 5 mins."

"Go right ahead and fix it", I replied.

5 minutes and a few turns of an allen key later he'd extracted the loose bolt out of the left footrest mount that had slowly over time worked it's way out and stuck under the lever. I thanked him and he dissapeard off on his merry way whilst I, with a lovelly relieved feeling, coated the bolt in nutlock and tightened it back into the hole.

It turned out that previously when I had put my weight on the lever it pushed the bolt back into the hole, whereas this time it had come out too far and stuck.

K.

Krebsy will def check that out. Map the clutch is the whole way in and not to many revs. Only started doing it recently and only done it twice.

Thanks all will bear this all in mind when i get someone to have a look at it. Will end up selling, not good for wear and tear this bike.

My DT is a little funny going from 3rd >2nd every once in a few hundred miles. Done it at least 3 times now in the 2 months Ive been riding it. It just jams and wont budge. Letting the clutch out completely with weight on the gear lever slots it in place fine though. I think its from shifting too lazily. Like said you need to be slightly firm with it or "positive" as it was put. That word pretty much sums it up.

Its a pain it really does get jammed and you have to kick it, dont want to crash the gear box and apparently you have to smash they thing open to see in it. I wish i knew more about bike engines to discribe better but i think you all got the jist there. I hope its not to serious as it will cost me again. will let you all know soon.

I have had this happen for both reasons!

A dragging clutch will make gearchanges nasty, but there will be other symptoms. If your problem prsists when you adjust the clutch up to the point where it slips, then you can really rule out this as a cause. Also, a grabby clutch will affect all your shifts, and will also cause you problems at the lights!

A bent selector fork or a problem with the selector drum ( less likely ) will usually cause a problem with a specific change. I had a KH250 with a knackered selector, and that refused to go into first without a big boot! Pins in the back of the selector forks run in grooves on the selector drum to actually move the gear clusters around. It is not uncommon for the actual fork part of the selector forks to get bent or burred, which prevents the drum from moving the gears where they are supposed to be.

The bad news is that to fix this, you need to take the engine out and will have to split the crankcases to get at the offending parts. The good news is, that on a small and simple engine like this, it's not as bad a job as you might think Very Happy

As far as the engine goes, I don't know if Lifan designed their own, or have license built something from Honda or Yamaha or whatever. I wouldn't try and fit anyhthing other than the intended parts unless oyu are VERY sure of what you are doing. For example... my Supermoto is built by MZ. It uses a licence built XTZ660 Tenere engine, and I know from speaking to the importers that they buy the engines complete from Yamaha and fit outer covers with their logo on. Yamaha engine parts do fit. Had they built the engines themselves based on the 660 Yamaha lump, they could have changed ANY part and you wouldn't be able to tell without a micrometer!

Anyway... sounds like you are going to have to bite the bullet and either break out the tools....or break out the wallet!

Aye, it was the external gear selector mechanism on mine that was worn. Luckily on my bike it is under its own seperate cover. In the end I just robbed one out of a spare engine. I don't think that is the problem in this case though, a worn selector just means the lever flaps up and down without selecting a gear.

My vote is also for bent selector fork unless something is catching on the lever itself..
