Yep, there were a few on the mainland. A few full licence holders bought them.

Quite common in Northern Ireland where the 125 / 12hp limit did not apply (250 learner law until the mid 1990s, but 250 insurance was hideous).

Certainly did exsist, but don't know of anyone who had one personally.

There were a few companies that manufactured "Full Power" 125's back then, alongside the 12bhp "Restricted" ones.

Probably (one of) the most sucessful ones would have been the Aprilia AF-1 Futura, with it's impressive 25bhp.

The AF-1 Futura... Now there's a 2 wheeled "Shell Suit" if you ever saw one.

Except you have posted a pic of an AF1 Sintesi.

23hp at the back wheel in the road tests, ~33hp claimed by Aprilia.

And I have one in the garage.

The AR125 was pretty much at the end of its life when the Sintesi came out. Yamaha sold a full power RD125LC, and kits to convert the TZR125 to full power. Honda would not sell full power 125s (not even in Northern Ireland where they were learner legal), and Suzuki never bothered with the full power RG125. Even Gilera only imported the restricted versions of their 125s (and being rather too anal at keeping to the 12hp limit, landed up with pretty slow 125s that nobody bought).

The ones in the "Benetton" colours were the AF1 Sintesi Replica (exactly the same except the paint job). The pic you posted is a normal 1988 model AF1 Sintesi. The 1989 model ones had similar colour schemes but different clocks, and electronically controlled power valve (rather than controlled by exhaust gas pressure) and a more pointy fairing with smaller headlights.

The Futura came out in 1990, and 1991 to the UK. Early ones were while with a red seat unit and a white fairing with 2 shades of purple graphics. They used a load of other colour schemes as well.

There was also the original AF1 that also came in a "replica" colour scheme (white with red and green). While the original AF1 had a single headlight (same as the Triumph Trophy used a few years later) the replica version of it had twin lights.
