Does anyone have any experience in teaching a foreigner English? A guy from Hungary that I know has come over to learn the language but no courses start till he leaves.

So out of everyone that knows this bloke, I'm the nearest thing to a teacher with an A Level in English Language. Neutral

Could someone give me a hand as to how I'm supposed to help him? I'm gonna need to make like little lesson plans, and it's mainly conversation and phonetics.

He only knows very basic English. Not enough to hold a conversation with over the phone. He's an architect and is good with computers so should I teach him the English equivalents of these kinds of subjects?

Should I try to learn a few Hungarian phrases?

I'm new to this, so if anyone has any ideas could they help me out please.

Thankyou.

Initially it might be an idea if you just built on whatever basic knowledge he already has, in 'every day' situations. Go shopping, go into town etc, so that he can see English in use. Most people understand more than they can speak, so seeing you use it might help him learn to use stuff he already sort-of knows.

What kind of timescale are you looking at?

I assume that he has brought some kind of textbooks with him for reference, if so, he will at least have something solid to back up anything he picks up from you.

Sounds like an interesting project - it's also rather sweet of you!

Cheers Mister James, that's very helpful. I don't think he has any textbooks though.

Thanks again.
