This has been bothering me for a little while.

There are a lot of posts on this forum about jobs, and a worrying number of you kids decide to join the police. Then you get knocked back from the police or get scared off by the application form and decide to join the armed forces.

Why?

As we heard from goose, being in armed forces is crap - they pay and conditions are awful, they own you, and you run an ever stronger risk of getting shot in a sandy country.

There are other jobs out there. Big companies desperate for bright young kids to take on in clerical positions with promotion expected. You don't need a degree, and you can expect to be at the same level as graduate entrants within 3 years if you do some work.

Is the job market really that opaque that you kids just can't find entry level jobs, or is it that you won't consider a job advertised at 12k with promotion in mind, and would rather take a job at 13k with no future?

I don't understand it myself either.

Although I did give a LOT of thought to the police, then threw my application in the bin when I realised exactly what I'd have in store for the rest of my life.

Went from earning £50 a week in a chinese restaurant to a shitty telecoms company, then agency work. Now I'm working in the games industry - my dream job!

you said it in one word

work

ie you have to climb the greasy pole and there are far too many people unwilling to do that and either stay put in the job that they first get , or not put the effort in to get qualifications to move higher,

its pretty tragic looking at my office (this is just a tide me over job) since they have been there 10+ years some more than 15 , and been getting shitty pay rise after shitty pay rise , while the person I replaced was in exactly the same position as me (albeit less qualified), but jumped ship after 3 years and earns double what my managers earn.

think you sumed it up there really.

dont think people are prepared to put up with the shit it takes to get promoted these days.

took 4 years of carrying a tool box for someone and all the shitty jobs like sitting in lofts on hot days and unblocking bogs to get qualified but now pick and choose jobs never install anything just boiler services and breakdowns jez my jobs easy

you just need to hang in there kids

maybe we should ban those movies , you know the type where somebody like tom hanks or M J fox , start with a huge company and in a matter of weeks works there way to the top , life isn't like that,

and today it seems many people want results NOW not later, think about it credit cards , massive debt consumerism, it took me ages to learn my photoshop and life drawing skills , I see n00bs try it fail after one or two attempts and give up.

As distinct from stuffy office, shitty wages, kowtowing to some embittered nonce stuck with just a taste of power who's been flying a desk for most of his natural life?

No contest.

Good for you, I hope you continued getting promoted and making more.

Lots of the kids on here don't make 18k, or even 14k. I just don't really understand why.

I once considered the Army.

I wasn't much of a team leader, I did what I was told and did it well. I didn't want to lead, I was happy following. Some younger people these days just want to be told what to do and do it.

Dont forget, you look at school, sports is on the bottom of the pile so things like teamwork dont exist. Kinds are told you do this and you will get good GCSE's Then you do that and get good A Levels. Then you goto Uni for 3 years and you'd be set for life.

Pretty much army mentality from age 5, do as you're told and thats it.

Since Ive ben in my new job and joining a voluntary organisation, I've switched around, I enjoy being a leader. So the army would never be an option for me. Free thinkers dont take orders well!

Havent contemplated joining the Police or armed forces myself but it is still hard to get a job. I'm 21 now and am considered "too old" for apprenticeships etc. Getting an office job isnt simple for me either for some reason. Quite demoralising tbh, and no amount of beligerent cv sending seem's to solve the problem.

I would never want to work for a big company, yeah it would be cool to be earning 20k, but for the rest of my life? no thanks. I am happy on my apprentice wage of 8k and I am 20 years old. When I have some experience under my belt I will set up my own joinery workshop, being your own boss is the only way to go Thumbs Up

well, no.

The idea being that you keep progressing up through the company. 20k is higher clerical/bottom managment money, I'd expect to be past that sort of benchmark by my mid 20s and well past 30-35k when I'm 30.

Being your own boss is a nice idea, its something I'd like to do myself, but you have to work bloody hard to make any money.

You appear to be making the mistake of thinking that everyone is driven by money.

There aren't many people whose dream job involves sitting at a desk for forty years. What stories will they have to tell their grandkids when they're older? "Well, one day the aircon broke and we had to make do with three desk fans for the entire office!" Hardly a legacy to be proud of. My point is that everyone wants something different.

You also need to take into account education/social background, it can be a decent life/money in the forces for someone starting out with nothing and a bit of fitness. It also depends on which of the armed forces you join and what role you get, some use it as an apprenticeship for a trade too.

The money isn't as bad as you would imagine and you get all your food and lodgings paid for. There's plenty of spending money if you're young, single and living on site.

You need to look at the current environment to see why people want to go in the Police and Armed Forces.

A) There is a war (or numerous wars) going on.

B) Our country is full of illegals, terrorists, rapists and paedophiles.

All of which is broadcast specifically by the mass media, so young people are being inspired to change situations.

I bet 10 years ago there wasn't as many people going in the Armed Forces, just because the world was peaceful.

I'm fairly sure that today's world is just as 'safe' as it was in the past.

i.e. crime naturally fluctuates but you're not significantly no more likely to be raped or killed (by an act of terrorism/by an 'illegal' or anyone else) than before. There are not more paedophiles out there, we just hear about them/vilify them more.

The media has done a good job of ruling us by fear.

As for joining the armed forces? I think it's quite easy to get sucked in by the romance of current adverts.

Good point: my friend joined the navy, got them to pay for his university engineering course and then left. He did pretty well out of the armed forces but as a skilled academic type he was probably one of the more fortunate ones.

Yeah but is that a lot of money?

I'm 23 and last year I earned £29k and had a company car. I always thought when I was younger that £35k a year would get me a nice house and a fancy car and I could go out whenever I wanted.

Not true!

£50-60k is a slightly more realistic figure. How long would it take to build up to that?!

I'm talking up North here too, not down in that London.

I can really see the appeal of joining the police and just because you work for the police doesn't mean you can't have side-interests, property developing etc. I reckon policing would be much more fun than being a desk jockey!

Then again working hard and studying for better stuff isn't so easy,

last thing on my mind when I get home is to study though I do it anyway ,

esp since there are people I work for who earn 900K and complain that they have to pay tax.

I wanted to be an Officer when I was a kid.

I wanted to fly fast jets.

Then my best mate from school joined the RAF when he was 16.

He hated every single minute (admittedly as a very junior rank).

It didn't have a good effect on him. I'd say Goose got out at exactly the right moment.

As for police? Why would I want to be brainwashed into being a jumped up officious twat? Paramedic... bike crashes. Say no more.

Fireman. I'm too small.

Fuck it, I'm a Software Engineer now!! Very Happy

One of these days, when I'm thouroughly pissed off with being a civil servant, I'm going to have to suck spencer's cock and join the BCF company.

I could work in recruitment...
