I noticed you've both kindly left out the fact that you had your backsides handed to you by someone else on the forum in the Caterhams... Cool Laughing Wink

At least I managed a donut on my first run, we had to wait until the second to last course of the day before you finally got up to speed! Laughing

T'was a good day though and will do it again. Obviously!

Caterham Slalom Day - £169 for the full day, held in the empty Silverstone car park.

I've wanted to drive a Caterham 7 ever since I saw the Lotus 7 in the opening titles of 'The Prisoner' Embarassed

Adam P recommended these days as being far more fun than any of the 'experience days' you see advertised, since being run by Caterham themselves, they really want you to get 'into' their cars in the hope that you'll buy one.

The cars we used had a 1.6 litre engine, making about 120bhp. Since the purpose of the day is to be lobbing it sideways around cones, they're set up to be very oversteery and have really shit tyres on the rears for maximum slideyness. Basically, imagine trying to go round corners in your road car on ice.

The format of the day is a succession of coned courses, including the 360 degree donut cone - you get one practice run then three timed runs round each course.

The first couple of runs are about getting used to the car and de-programming your road car instincts. For example, there's no clutch slipping to be had here, it's either in or out. The donut cone is all about pulling up on full lock, revving it to about 4k and dumping it Cool

As the day progresses, you're encouraged to get more and more aggressive with the car, they actually *want* to see you spinning out uncontrollably in a haze of tyre smoke, which everyone does at least once.

In terms of time spent in the car, it actually added up to about 22 minutes total - that sounds shit but it's possibly the most intensive thing I've ever done in a motor vehicle. A 30 second run filled with wheel-flailing oversteer left me feeling similar to a 20 minute trackday session. Very Happy

The cars are wonderfully basic - no powersteering to mess around with the feel, no ABS to make braking easy for idiots, just a proper car with the engine in the front and the drive at the back. The accelleration wouldn't blow a biker's mind, but is very quick as they really don't weigh much. Handling is fantastic, there's not much travel lock to lock and there's no body roll whatsoever, so you can just lob it around with complete confidence. Plus you can actually see your front wheels!

One day, I will own one. Oh yes, it will be mine. Smile

I was on G's red SV rather than my usual steed.

Half of me's in the right hand corner of that photo, right next to your mate in green, so I musta been riding practically right next to you and never realised. Embarassed

Everything you need to know right there. I reckon I should be on comission from Caterham by now! Laughing

Looks like you guys had an absolute blast!

Dubai Autodrome run track sessions with Caterham 7s but their set up to be shit hot handling machines for the track not powerslide and donut toys.

Although saying that, it's easy enough to do!

AS Bendy said the acceleration won't rip a bikers mind, but they are quick QUICK cars!

I've always fancied buying a kit and building it from the ground up.
