Hi,

I've recently had my 106 GTI written off (obviously) and the insurers have coughed up with a reasonable amount. A work mate has offered to buy my car off me for trackday use. Is this ok or will the insurers want the car back? The car is drivable and here is a list of the damage:

Dent in tailgate
circular dents in both rear quarter panels
Boot floor damaged
Front bumper pushed back damaging both radiator cowls

Now I haven't a clue as to how much I should sell it for as it is a write off and I don't want to rip him off. Anyone have any advice?

Cheers,

Will

Just buy the car back of the insurers and then sell it to your mate.

However is he going to trailer the car to track days or drive it there?

If he plans to drive it there then he'll need to get it repaired and approved to go back on the road. SVA test I think or similar.

If he plans to trailer it fine as is (providing the track marshall gives it the ok).

Don't forget to let DVLA know change of ownership and then prob need to SORN it?

As for price... depends on if they are a good mate or not Laughing

All depends on what category it was.

If I remember correctly the categorys are..

Cat A - Must be destroyed/crushed (typically when involved in a fatal accident)

Cat B - Can only be broken for parts, never put back on the road. (Typically just very bad accidents, heavy deformed crumble zones/chassis)

Cat C - Can be repaired but has to be inspected possible re-SVAed (typically severe accidents but only resulting in minor chassis deformation)

Cat D - Beyond economical repair, can be put back on the road with no inspection. (Typically superficial damage to older cars or where parts are expensive)

If it was anything more than a Cat C, you either wouldn't have walked away from the crash, or the insurance company wouldn't even offer it back to you. If its a C or D, then go for it, sell it on, just make sure its sold as not road worthy or for 'Spares or Repairs'.

Think that about sums it up....could be wrong tho, worth checking with the insurance company....

Hi,

Right, as far as I know they wouldn't repair it because it was going to be too expensive. Which means cat D. What do you mean by selling it as not road worthy or 'spares or repairs'?

The insurers haven't actually said anything about the car. All thats happened is that the salvage company have said they'll take it away if I want or they'll leave it.

What happens regarding it still being in my name. Presumably the new owner doesn't need to register it?

Cheers,

Will

Cat B vehicles will still often get offered back to the owner. Just check with your insurer that the car is yours to do what you want with before you go selling it. Then just sign the V5 over to your mate, if it's Cat B you won't have a V5 anymore, easiest way to tell.

Hi,

I had to send off my V5 with the insurance certificate and MOT to the insurers or DVLA I can't remember who. So whatever happens the car is still technically in my name.

Cheers,

Will

Unfortunatly it won't as far as I'm aware. Once the insurance company pay out, the car is their property.....

Hi,

Cheers for the info. I haven't heard anything from the insurers about removing the car so I assumed that it was mine to do with what I liked. Do you think it's worth call them and asking where I stand?

Cheers,

Will
