Hi, Ive just bought call of duty 2, its a great game but I have a problem, basically pixels get strectched accorss the screen randomly, creating visual walls, and just generally making it hard to see whats going on.

i've attached a screen shot of what I see when I play, any idea whats going on?

nope turned them down as much as I could (there isnt very many options) the game sort of decides for you what is best for you, but i'm running it on the lowest resolution, turned off all the fancy effects, still getting these weird lines all over the place.

it did this when I played max payne 2, but all it ever did was give me 10m long clips..

It could be a graphics card fault. Does it happen with any other game? Download 3dMark (graphics card benchmarking software) and see if it happens on any of those tests. You can also compare your score to other similar setups to see if that indicates a problem.

Looks to me to be either of the following:

1] Hot Hardware (not as in the latest bling bling, but literally over heating.) -- What graphics card have you got? And what case cooling?

2] Incompatabilities between Motherboard/Chipset and Graphics card. -- Tried another graphics card to help debugging?

3] An actual problem with the game itself -- Have similar issues been reported CoD2 games/forums? Has the game been patched to the latest stable patch (some games have beta patches released, which more ofton than not break more things than they fix!)

Ring any bells?

My Ati Radeon X600 did that just before it blew up.

have you installed the latest patch for the game?

a lot of them fix bugs in graphics card compatibility etc.

I have an nvidia geforce 4 ti 4200, its an agp 8x card, cooling is just a lot of case fans, fan of processor fan on card, 2 fans drawing air through the case.

graphics card is one of the few my motherboard will accept so i know its not incompatibility ^^

I will try sort out getting a game patch after college,

and I dont like the sound of my card blowing up :/

and I should really try get back into computers again, I havent used mine for anything but internet for about a year now :/

Nope... t'ain't vsync tearing. The GPU Core is getting stressed out by either not enough voltage or too much heat. Could be a sign of PSU on it's way out.

Check voltage levels under PCHealth in bios and report back... if you can't get to bios, google for "SiSoft Sandra" and install, run, and in there run the Motherboard module and it should list voltage rails etc. Post that up for us to have a look at.

No temp or fan monitoring on those cards unfortunately, so check fan is running on the card at the time it happens visually...

This kind of fault is seen frequently on overclocked cards as a sign that supplied voltage needs increasing or GPU temp needs decreasing.

CoD2 and MaxPayne both put a fairly intensive load on older GPU Cores in comparison to other games, which causes the GPU to require more power and to run hotter.

As the PSU in your PC gets hotter, it's output decreases, so check fans in PSU both work...

I had exactly the same problem once. Tried everything - and I mean everything - new drivers, old drivers, reinstall games, reinstall windows, endless google searches...

Until I switched off the PC, opened it up and found that the end of the gfx card overlapped the IDE socket by a couple of mm, and had lifted the end of the gfx card out of its slot, Changed the IDE cable, re-seated the card, and the problem never appeared again.

Worth checking...

Duff seating will cause current loss resulting in an underpowered card... and can also short across points resulting in component-specific overheats, so yep, definitely worth checking card seating.

looks like over heating or extreem over clocking to me.

basicaly if you card is running at stock speeds, then check the fan is still working.

if not then this is the problem.
If it is then the card is most lickley on its way out.

I agree with not enough voltage or getting too hot.

That range of card is quite old now so maybe check the fan on the GPU is actually spinning. I had this card when they were new and the fans used to fail quite a bit. If you cant see it spinning it won't harm it to lightly touch it to see if it vibrates against your finger.
Don't touch the circuit board itself though whatever you do.
If all else fails fit an aftermarket fan.

One thing I forgot, are you sure no one has ever overclocked it using the cards BIOS and not drivers? It's permanent if done to the card.

That explains why my old card packed up. Overclocked to the MAX. Laughing

ok from pc health i got this

cpu temp - 51 degrees C
M/B temp - 38 degrees C

Fan Speed 3863 RPM

V core : 1.332V
+3.30V : 3.306V
+5.00V : 5.094V
+12.0V : 11.677V

the fan does spin properly, Ive cleaned it out recently and checked it, and I can hear it spinning now as it is the loudest fan in the case.

I dont know if my graphics card has ever been over clocked, its possible it is a 2nd hand card, main board isnt however.

That's telling you the CPU fan speed and temp. The graphics card fan is seperate and hard to see as it's on it's side.

12v rail is low to say that's sat in bios in PCHealth...

When you put the PC under load (ie: fire up a game) it'll be dropping even further, and if it drops below 11.4v then yes, you'll start to see visible corruption in graphics such as you're currently seeing.

Stronger PSU is the most likely solution. Look on the side of your current PSU and you should see a sticker giving voltages and ampages per rail... check what ampage it lists for your 12v rail... and it should also state the PSU's total wattage.

Head to yer local PC shop, find one that has:

1) A higher overall wattage
2) A higher ampage on the 12v rail

Buy it, take it home, fit it, give it a try. If it doesn't work, take it back along with yer PC. Tell `em the story... ask them to have a look at it for ya.
