So last night I saw a news report of someone winning a hefty sum of money, something in the region of 35K.
With that money, id be happy, or at least a lot happier then I am at the moment, the thing that I couldn’t stop thinking about afterwards was how easy that money came to her and after that moment she is now sorted for along time to come. Ok, so she actually entered something and won but as a general rule I don’t enter anything as I hate being bombarded with junk mail and giving them my information.

I’m not poor, I live in my own place, I own a super bike, I can afford to have a few beers and wear decent clothes. But I would like to have my future secured without the labour, I’m sure of you would like that to.

There is a very thin line between getting by, and being sorted, by this I mean one day you could find out you’ve inherited a large sum of money from a relative and you won’t have to be breadlining it after moving into your new home for example.
The money’s out there to be taken, you could form a brilliant plan and earn it or you could rob a bank, if either one of these worked, no one would have to die in the process and you’d be sorted.
I’m fed up of seeing the wrong people with a lot of money, I feel down when I’m in town and have a think about whether it’s going to be £20 or £30 coming out of the machine tonight because I got to eat the next day.

Sorry if this is a little confusing but in short I’m just wondering what’s stopping me being totally dishonest and sorting myself out.

I think you're taking this far too seriously Everready.
I'm not poor because i go to work with my own transport, i can eat, and have a few beers, but like loads of people i know it gets hard at the end of the month.

I think I get where killa is coming from; it's the difference between having to budget to get by and not having to worry about money (as you have an abundance of it).

Personally I'm not motivated by money but have a respect for it (and for those who do not have much).

As an individual living in Dorset with a second-hand bike and second-hand car I know I am lucky, but by no means well off. As an individual who has a roof over his head, water and fresh food, I'm one of the wealthiest people in the world. And I mean that in a literal sense, not a tree hugging sense!

I drive through Canford Cliffs in Poole every day (I'm pretty sure it's the second most expensive strip of land in the UK, if not the first). Everyone has a Bentley and owns a house worth at least 4 million (and said houses are usually just their summer homes). I do not envy and it does make me question if it is 'right' for so few people to own so much of the worlds wealth.

Hmm, this has been hard to explain.
Not quite the thing i was after.......um.....

It's the strange thing that is money, money is bloody everywhere but most of us have to work hard to get it. If you pulled something off like a bank job tomorow and got away scot free, you'd be sorted, that easily.
This is hard to get across on a post, but i find it a mind boggle sometimes that money is all around us and is quite literally up for grabs but a lot of us will just drag ourselves to work and earn a small amount.

Confused Hmm, sorry this isn't coming out very well.

So how are "we" going to get this money ?

I certainly won't be robbing a bank ( thats someones elses job from on here ) and I've nearly no chance of winning the lottery or any other prize where the sums are large. I also don't think that I'll have a eureka moment where I think up the next big thing that will make my fortune.

So there's only one way to get money and that to go to work every day and hope there's enough left come Friday.

This feels like an extention of the I had a cheque for xxx on me desk today....

Me I sometimes wish I could turn back time and be 15 again and instead of being super highly educated , go be a caterer , alot of my contempories did and earned 90-120K a year after tax. 10 years later they have around 1 mil in the bank and get 34K in interest yearly from is own their own homes and go out to work any jobs they like and not have to worry about the money or any long term career plans ,

and they rent their previous shops out for another 13K a year.

the cost? , they completely sacrificed 10 years of their youth and did not go out drinking /clubbing / riding for 10 years. have zero qualifications and were looked down on by everybody else.

A couple of folks I know work as secretaries they make £6/h but this doesn't bother them they already have 1.4 mil in the bank.

This illustrates why justice cannot happen in the real world , if everybody got their just deserts then there is no free will , it is why religion works for some people in that they accept that life is crap and that everything injustices

ie good things happening to bad people and bad things happening to good people crap they have done will be paid back in the afterlife.

in reality those people keep pushing it in my face and are my Dad's friend's sons who I generally try to avoid as much as possible, that said I'm still dreaming , and dreaming is important while those who have everything easy have little to look forward to.

£35k would be very nice. But it wouldn't secure your future. Personally, I'd have it spent inside a week.

I think I'd need at least £2.5M (and probably nearer £5M) to retire. Much less and by the time you've splashed out on a big house, a few bikes/cars and several hundred grand to all the relatives, you'd be down to a level that would generate less than you could earn (after taking into account the amount required to keep the capital sum in line with in inflation). OK, so you wouldn't have a mortgage to pay, but big houses and flash bikes/cars aren't cheap to keep.

Its all about the baseline.

At the moment I have my job, car, money for toys, flying. Its all rather nice, but I still want that little bit more. A faster car, a bigger faster plane, a bit more money, my own place.

But if I got all that I'd just want that next little bit more.

You could win the lottery tonight and get 10 mil. Once you've blown 5 mil of that on houses, cars, bike, holidays, toys, you'd be moaning about how you don't have 10 mil any more. Then you'd start moaning about how your lambo isn't quick enough, but no one makes a quicker car.

Believe me, its easy to rinse £35K.

I received 80 grand from a divorce settlement once, it arrived in December a few years ago now.

I bought a couple of bikes (second hand), bought a few clothes, had a decent holiday - home to NZ, gave my mother £30K to look after (I hope she's still got it, LOL), bought me bloke's tattoo sleeves ... and had "a few parties".

And I was back to being skint and working by the following August Rolling Eyes

And I'm more prudent with money than either my daughter or my boyfriend Shocked Shocked If they had access to the money at the time, it would have been all gone by April, LOL.

If I'd known I'd end up in the situation I am now, I certainly wouldn't have blown it so freely.

I'd be happy with a lottery win of about 10 mil, but , having had that little spending spree with the divorce money, this time I'd invest a lot of it much more sensibly

... but I don't do the lottery Rolling Eyes

No matter what lump sum you got, you're better off keeping an interest in some form of work, cos it keeps your mind occupied and gives you positive goals to continue chasing. But at least you could choose what to do for work, instead of doing some slog you might be unhappy with.

Innit.
What a thing to have to moan about Mr. Green

Plus, you'd be worried sick about some wanker pranging it, even just a ding in traffic would be setting you back a fortune, cos the cost of replacing a single panel in a luxury car is astronomical.

The expenses involved in maintaining the luxury lifestyle once you HAVE all the things you want is just as expensive as living on the cheap.

If I won a big-million lottery win, I'd probably still buy an old banger ... probably a 55 Chevy Mr. Green

That's another point ... who would you tell if you did win? The "no promotion" clause in the lottery thing would be stress in itself. You'd be pleased to have won and want to tell the world but then all those palm-out scroungers suddenly who remember you used to be their best friend/favourite aunty/niece/sister, etc ... urgh!

I like to think I'd shut up about a big lump sum ... but I know I prolly couldn't Mr. Green

Hi

£1m would probably set you up for life, without being rich. Buy a normalish house (say £200k), leaving £800k. Invested you should be able to get £40k a year interested, which would be easily enough to live on (especially without a mortgage) in reasonable style. Only trouble is the £800ks value would be reducing due to inflation, but should still keep you going for your life.

£2m would give you enough to do the same easily with a bigger house and keeping the value of the capital up.

Not sure what I would do if I won the lottery (after wondering how when I don't do it). Probably set up a small business doing something I wanted to do without having to worry about how much income I got from it.

Think that a bank job is highly unlikely to get you anything like enough to retire on.

All the best

Keith

I think you'd be surprised just how far 35k doesnt go. When youre in a situation where the end of the month is still a problem no matter what you do, it seems like a fortune. I paid less then that for my first house Smile it was a fortuneto me then. Looking at it from my current position, I dont think it would last much over a year if I was living on it, other wise it could pay a chunk off the mortgage or be saved as a fun fund for extra hols and stuff. Life enhancing sure but probably not that life changing.

As for some having money some not, for those of us who have worked for our money, I would say most of us have taken big risks and really grafted at some point to ge the things we have. I know I did.

its nice to get a lump of cash, and its possible to make life changes if you dont mind a little risk

start up a new business, emmigrate, maybe get a string of properites with buy to let mortgages etc

but the sensible option would be to pay off some of the mortgage of your place, buy yourself a few treats, and put some in tracker funds, bonds and savings accounts

the potential for life changing decisions is good, but you need a good plan, and its not guaranteed to work

to have a life without labour, you would need to set up something that gave you enough to live to whatever standard you wanted to

this wouldnt necessarily be difficult, if you bought a string of buy to lets here, and then lived abroad somewhere where it was cheap and you could get pissed everynight for about 10p and shower gifts on pretty foreign girls to get them to sleep with u

hmmm

but to stay living in this country and just live off interest, and live to the same standard as when you were working, you would need a fair whack

id only blow a max of 10% of the total, but i wouldnt mind using the interest each year as income rather than just letting it grow, but then when you allow for inflation, the most you would get would be a 2.5% income

so to get 13k a year in interest, you would need £520k

you can get £3k a year from being on benefits, but to get the same thing from an investment you would need £120k

and once you get the £120k you cant legally claim again until you have spend it all

I think i know what you're trying to say Killa, but life's not like that. You could go out and rob a bank or get money immorally, but this stuff has a habit of coming round and biting you on the backside.

BUT... everyone in the free world has choices. Some know it but bury their head in the sand, others dont even realise whats going on and a minority say 5% do something about it.

We all have 24 hours in a day and 7 days in a week, but people use that time in different ways. If you look at all of the rich people in the world, they are the 5% that got off their arse and used their time to make themselves rich. Instead of spending money in the pub on a friday night, they would invest that money..invest the returns from that money.. and so forth.

There are many many ways to be rich, the first thing i did was to invest in myself - by reading self help books (for me these were books on gaining confidence, how to be rich and investing).

Money itself wont make you happy - its the choices it gives you that can make you happy. For me that would be waking up when i want to and not because my alarm is going off, riding my bike all day everyday while my kids are at school, being there to pick them up, being able to have every school holiday with them, having the house i want, the cars i want, the bikes i want...etc, you get the point.

There is so much money out there for the taking, why shouldn't you have it?!

By the way i'm not rich yet, not even close but it's a work-in-progress and i know i will be Very Happy

I always wonder, what do you give mates? Doesn't seem right to just hand them a cheque, i'd probably just buy my closest friends a nice car & take em holiday alot.

Would probably change friendships as they wouldn't want to upset you incase you stop buying em shit & you would probably notice them around alot more. Must be weird have everyone licking you're ass.

I say goodluck to anyone who wants to robb a bank, as long as noone gets hurt.
