M25 / M42 Variable speed limits.

I've recently started having to go down to London quite regularly with work and was wondering whether the speed cameras are live if a reduced speed limit isn't in force.

I think the on the M42 the hard shoulder lane was open to traffic for the first time in a new pilot scheme to use the overhead LED boards telling you that you can in congested traffic.

I know completely unrelated.

I'd expect they probably are active at all times.

I've been informed that they are active all the time.

He's also told me they don't flash you until you go through at 100mph odd**.

** = Don't take that as Gospel though.

I believe they are, so set to 70 when there is no other limit showing.

I know someone who is adamant that the M25 variable-speed cameras haven't been working since before the roadworks. I know that a guy from work got a flash in the dead of night (and fined) at 104mph when there was no limit lit.

Put it like this.

I've seen a 104 ticket, photo and all, when the signs weren't lit. This was about 10 years ago or so. I've also been through unlit ones at 90 many times (last summer)without the driver getting flashed or fined.
