Sounds like school dinners haven't improved then, but why not just take in a packed lunch... or isn't that allowed now?

When I was in primary school there used to be a small room allocated to those on pack lunches, there was only around 10 of us. The rest had cooked (well burnt/over boiled) school dinners in the main hall.

Over subsequent years this room had expanded to a small classroom, then a large classroom, then two classrooms, then into the main hall taking up half of the 20 or so tables. By the time i left only 6.. yes SIX of the pupils were still on school dinners, every single table bar one was now for packed lunches Laughing

What annoys me is that after years of feeding kids utter cack, the schools are suddenly trying to take the moral high ground and sneer at the parents.

Schools are there to educate kids, it isn't boot camp! I notice that they seem to be incapable of teaching the younger generation manners, but are happy to force them to follow Jamie Oliver's personal tastes!

It's great that the schools provide healthy options, but it shouldn't be compulsory, and we certainly shouldn't be seeing headmasters questioning what parents chose to allow their children to eat - that isn't his job. I'd happier knowing he was concentrating on teaching kids to be able to write English, as stories out today suggest that half of all uni students can't write properly, let alone GCSE dropouts!

Years of spending lunch money on chips and space invaders didn't do me any harm.

I've actually got no problem with what Jamie did, simply with teachers who ignore their actual responsibilities and waste time and effort preaching about something that has little to do with them.

I remember flicking through some paperwork for my youngest brother when he was much younger, and the school dictated would could and could not be put into lunchboxes! I used to buy him banned items deliberately in the hope that someone would notice and ask him who was to blame.....no-one took the bait though, I guess the dinner ladies were smart enough to know which rules to turn a blind eye to!

That's ridiculous!

My lad wont have school dinners, he loves me to make him packed luches. The thing is he WILL NOT eat fruit/vegetables/salads or anything else remotely healthy. I always put some form of fruit in his lunchbox but it always comes back uneaten.

I came to the decision that i could fill his lunchbox with healthy things that he wouldnt eat, or let him have what he wants (within reason) he takes sandwiches and eats those, jaffa cakes or something similar, a banana and a pack of french fries. Very rarely he'll eat the banana.

The thing is if i packed what they suggested, he wouldnt eat anything and so wouldnt be able to concentrate in class (as has been stated by school officials before).

My little boy isnt overweight at all and is prefectly healthy says the Health Visitor, so why should i be told what i can and cant feed him?! Load of crap as usual Rolling Eyes

I always refused to eat fruit I was given in my lunch, my parents got the hint eventually and stopped sending it in.

The few times my mum packed me a salad, it usually ended up exploding in my bag. This happened most notably in my first week of my first year at Richard Pates Grammar School in Cheltenham - smothering all my nice new books in nasty smelly salad and earning me several bollockings over the next few months as to the state of them all. Salad was irrevocably taken off the menu as of that day.

I wonder whether if I was back at school eating a packed lunch now, teachers would be confiscating my dad's appalling cheese sandwiches. His ham-fisted cutting meant that a cheese sandwich contained more fat than one would find in the average American Quake 3 fan - certainly more than a bag of crisps or a Penguin bar.

Why are kids so against fruit and veg?? Thats what I dont understand. I'm not keen on some vegatables. (asparagus, swede, corgettes) but i love others (sprouts, cabbage, cauli).
When I was a kid I ate what was on my plate because anything I left was going to get served up at my next meal until it was eaten.
