Ok so tell me your insomnia cures , my insomnia went away for a while and has now come back probably due to lots of worries about life and work, its funny as I'm not really a worrying person just this BS sexual harrassment case (even though I know I will win) and other general things in life,

Quite normally I think about it for a sec and think meh , whatever happens happens..... since consequences are less important since its not as if I have any dependents or a mortgage to pay off.

Working out till I'm tired doesn't work anymore , nor does hot milk , or boring economics textbooks

Any suggestions

some exercise in the day (not before bed)
hot bath
horlicks (surprisingly effective)
wind down with a book before sleep
go to sleep with the radio on to distract from unpleasant thoughts
(best is sleep timer so its on for 30mins or so and then goes off)

My dad was telling me on the weekend that taking Magnesium helps one to sleep better especially if suffering from Insomnia. (He uses it).

Anyway, from BBC Health;

Quote:
Magnesium
...
Therapeutic uses: menstrual pain and PMS, osteoporosis, insomnia, morning sickness, joint pain, heart disease, asthma, nervousness, anxiety and other mental problems. It's also important for alcoholics, diabetics and epileptics, although supplementation requires professional supervision.

You can get the supplements from stores like Holland and Barret.

I myself have not tried it so cannot verify if it helps to make one sleep better.

Thumbs Up

a good shag works well.....and if it dosent work, well, you can always shag some more Laughing

alternatively, I find focussing on the random images and patterns that my mind throws to my closed eyes also works well...

Don't go to bed until you're going to sleep. Don't even go to your bedroom if you can avoid it. It helps your body get used to the bedroom being for sleeping, not watching tv, playing on the pc, posting on BCF etc.

Try making up stories in your mind, stupid ones that have nothing to do with anything you're worried about.

Rick.

Used to get insomnia loads, between 2 and 4 hours of sleep a night tops. Went away for a while but came back after various medical related rubbish.

Get it every now and again - usually take 800 - 1200mg ibuprofen with a multivitamin...usually works...not a great answer I know. Circumstances blah blah...

Try chatting to someone who knows what they're talking about with regards to your life worries - sounds like the source so you may as well attack it directly.

A.

Try laying down, get into the most comfortable position you can, and try to empty your mind.

For example try and visualise a box in your mind and place all of your thoughts inside of it. You should have fallen asleep by this time if you managed to clear your mind correctly.

However it's easier said than done Neutral Wink

I do body balance some nights before bed (kind of a mix between yoga and tai chi).

Another thing that I try to do is make sure I do lots during the day so that I am barely able to stand by the time I get home from work and can just flop into my bed (I work late shift so don't get home until nearly midnight), I don't take caffine, red meat, or watch television.

Try turning off any unnecessary electrical equipment or move them out of your bedroom. Keep electrical alarm clocks (or other electical stuff) a few feet away from your bed. Electrical stuff create force-fields which can affect our brains and disrupt our sleep. Keeping your alarm clock away from your bed will help to reduce the urge to watch your clock. Watching your clock will keep your brain stimulated and anxious, so you won't sleep so well.

Oh and TV and computer games before bedtime keep your mind active so its best to avoid them.

(I could go on for ages on this subject, so I will stop here before it goes on too much)

Best one ive found was something someone on here suggested.

Try and imagine a naked flame. Not a lighter or something, the actual naked flame. Its bloody hard, and it makes you concentrate on just that. Thus helping you forget everything else.

Have a few cans, that always works for me Thumbs Up

Open window with plenty of fresh air helps too.

If you own a dog or a cat let them sleep on the bed as their breathing patterns are very soothing. Best sleep I used to have was when my nephew was about 6months old and used to fall asleep on my chest. The sound and motion of a babies breathing I guess.

Read a dictionary

Last year at uni I couldn't always get to sleep so I just accpted that I wasn't going to be easily able to go to sleep in the next hour or so so I would get out of bed and stop trying and watch some tv. Red Bull Races used to be on at 2am alot Thumbs Up

A Radox Bath.

If it's stress related, discuss what's causing you stress with people who will understand and support you. You can tie yourself in knots with worry and make problems seem much larger than they really are. Talking with people can often make them seem much smaller, which will help. It always has done for me.

couple more good ones that i used to use....

#1. imagine a clock face with no numbers, and just a smooth flowing second hand. start breathing in when the hand passes where the 6 should be, and out where the twelve should be. once you get a comfortable rhythm, imagine the second hand slowing down ever so slowly, and let your breathing follow it. think of nothing else and you'll soon be under.

#2. lie down in bed however you feel most comfortable. starting with your toes, tense, hold, and relax every muscle group you can find/ think of, three times each. work your way up your body very slowly, and when you reach the top of your head, relax everything you can, just go limp. again you should fall asleep very quickly, though this wont work if you get erotic thoughts about flexing your crotch muscles.....girls.. Laughing

Those people mentioning sex have a point...

It's been scientically proven that masturbation is a cure for insomnia.

Edit: And I'm not just saying it. It is really true!
