How can I research my family tree as cheaply as possible?

My grandmother.... Rose O RLY (stop laughing dragonfly Laughing ) came over from Ireland and I o'Reilly Laughing want to look further into it.
My Father has his family tree back to 1842 and I would love to find out about my mother's side of the family (I hear they were a really interesting bunch)

So... anyone? Rolling Eyes

My Dad does this for a living; tracing other people's family trees for them.

There are a few websites that might help:

www.ancestry.com
www.familysearch.org
www.genealogy.com

The trick is that the records will have to have already been entered into these databases. It's possible some relative may already have done some of the research, or census records or some from a church record book may have already been entered.

If you're not able to find info about her online, you could always plan a trip to the area you know she was born in, and see if you can find some church registers or something that might have recorded a baptism (usually names of parents are recorded there as well) you can find dates of birth and death in graveyards, and marriages are also recorded in church registers.
