What happens when a cow doesnt get milked. Does its udders explode, or does the milk somehow go back inside the cow.

They moo like crazy and get very irritable. I suppose it must feel like a full bladder. You will probably have to wait for stinkwheel to give a scientific explanation of what actually happens.

Don't panic about not milking
23/8/2006

Industry research body Dexcel is telling farmers not to panic if they can’t milk their cows because of adverse weather.

A cow’s annual milk production will not drop significantly if she can't be milked for up to a week, a recent Dexcel trial shows.

If natural disasters such as severe snow or flooding prevent cows being milked for up to seven days in mid-lactation, there will be no significant impact on the cow's milk production for the total season.

Dawn Dalley, Dexcel's regional scientist for the South Island, says the trial results are "hugely surprising" and the research will reassure farmers that if they are unable to milk their cows, all is not lost for the season.

The finding is one of a number of interesting results from a recent Dexcel trial which studied what happens to a cow's milk production if she is not milked for two, four or seven days.

With winter 2006 hitting farmers hard with severe snowfall in the South

Island and heavy flooding in the North Island, the research is expected to have “significant implications” on crisis management planning for natural disasters, says Dalley.

“Dairy cows are remarkably resilient animals. From a farmer's perspective, if faced with floods or heavy snows, they don't need to panic about getting the cows milked straight away," she says.

"During the Manawatu floods in February 2004, farmers were worried about their cow's ability to cope without being milked. There were hundreds of cows being trucked to different farms and pushed through really small sheds.

“This research shows, in reality, farmers do have more time to assess the situation, and make sure they have the basics covered - feed, water and containment before worrying about milking them,” says Dalley.

She says the results support anecdotal evidence where farmers have been unable to milk their cows due to cyclone damage or severe weather events.

Dalley conducted the trial in Taranaki while working as the science manager of Westpac Taranaki Agricultural Research Station. The study involved 36 cows of mixed breeding that were in mid-lactation (120 days in-milk) and producing on average 15.5 litres/cow/day.

The cows were fed at lactating cow levels, although Dalley acknowledges feeding at this level could be an issue in extreme weather conditions.

“The most interesting finding was that within six days of resuming milking, average milk production for all groups was 14.3 litres/cow/day, so consequently the total season's production was not dramatically different.”

This was despite the fact that average milk yield for all the treatments fell to 4-7 litres/cow/day after milking resumed.

However, somatic cell counts had a huge "spike".

Dalley says for that had not been milked two and four days, it took three days for their cell counts to fall below the industry accepted level of 400,000 cells/ml.

For the seven-day treatment, it took five days for the level to drop to acceptable levels.

There was also an issue of mastitis. The two and four-day cows were not affected, but 25% of the seven-day cows developed mastitis

They can get mastitis (sp?) its not very pleasant, and their udders go hard. It sounds very painful.

yeah they do get mastitis which you can treat with penicillin either with an subcutaneous or intramuscular injection also an intramammary syringe which you have to push up the teat(but you tend to get trodden on quite a bit when you do that)i have known some cows actually stop producing milk if not milked or suckled by their calf.hope this helps and i havent bored you half to death Thumbs Up

If you don't milk them they go sour, and finally it comes out lumpy like cottage cheese.

Though if you spin the cow just right it's an easy way to produce butter*
