Hi everyone Mr. Green

I was wanting to know if there is any demand for chromed bike parts? I currently sell chromed car parts on eBay, and was thinking of expanding into motorbikes?

Is chrome desirable? As in swing arms, frame parts etc...?

For example would a chromed swing arm for a sports bike be popular, or is it not the done thing? If there is a demand, I will start buying plain parts off eBay for chroming. But first I need to know what you guys want!

I haven't a clue about bikes so any help/advice would be appreciated? ie what types of bikes/bikers would /would not be interested Wink

Cheers

Ben

Oops! Embarassed Double post, sorry.........

Ys there is great demand for chrome bike parts but mostly in the custom building scene and they are more likely to want to bring a part to you for chroming than buy an off-the-shelf bit that you have already done.

A majority of bike parts are alloy, so unless you have invented a chrome which adheres to alloy and will not flake off at the 1st sign of a chip then NO!

Chrome does not bond to alloy, it merely forms a shell around the part similar to a peanut, it will flake off in big chunks.

Not a massive demand in the UK from sports bikers - nothing like that in the US where a lot of sports bikes are bought to show off, rather than to be ridden (And the weather's a bit nicer).

Sure there is some for cruisers, so babyyam's link's probably your best bet.

Just wanted to say that I don't think the OP here was spam either.

Give the guy the benefit of the doubt! he's not selling bike bits yet and may not be ever, so a request to see if people are interested on a bike forum doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

If he's chromed a load of bike bits then plastered the forum with ebay links I'd be first in the queue to cut his balls off but a simple enquiry? Lighten up! Smile

I'd agree with Babyyam - the definition of Spam mentions Comercial advertising I believe, which he hasn't done (no links or suggestions you buy his stuff).

Jonny - think a lot more of cruiser stuff can be chromed.

Hi Chrometastic!

You could pop across to 100% Biker and Bikersweb where you might get more interest.

Thanks guys! I'm not spamming and not offering any of my contact details or specific products... all I want is the information. I hate spammers as much as you lot do.

Babyyam - Thanks for the link I will check it out!

Johnny GSXR - Chromium shouldn't flake off alloy at all! I've been chroming alloy rocker covers, suspension components, sumps etc... for ages and not had any problems. It's all down to the preparation in most cases. Acid etches etc...

As said, don't think there's much call for it for modern bikes. There might be a market for re-chroming knackered parts from older bikes, but I guess you know that's not a particularly easy thing to be doing.

The vespa and lambretta chaps still have a bit of a thing about chrome, and the biggest problem they have is a lot of the parts they can buy off the shelf are badly plated in the middle east.

US Stuff is mostly polished rather than Chromed anyway.

Danny's dad runs an electroplating business that does everything except chrome plating... maybe he could point you in the direction of some chroming work?

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Yeah, sportsbike riders are masochists. They like to spend days of their lives polishing alloy componants to a high shine. Then repeating the same process a week later and so on.

if i owned a cruiser style bike I would, but Im not so sure chrome would look right on a sports bike, but then I guess on some bikes it could work in places,

but then at the same time just dont think it suits sports bikes
