My SV's can gets very hot. So hot in fact that you can see a lot of heat haze coming off it. Due I suspect to the cat inside it. Also on winter ride outs when we stop for a break, I only have to so much as turn my back for a second before everyone's gloves are lined along it to warm them up (and mine are knocked off onto the floor naturally Rolling Eyes) Laughing

Have you seen a high power turbo'd car/bike run on a dyno? Sometimes the manifold and turbo gets so hot they turn transparant.

My mate took my TZR for a ride once.

Don't ask me how the hell he did it but at some point during the ride he put his leg so far back that it touched the exhaust. And the silly sod was wearing 3/4 lengths at the time.

His skin stuck to the exhaust and sizzled before he ripped it off and drove back to me in agony. The blister was the size of a tennis ball Shocked

Fucking hot! I've known mine gets super hot (it’s a std can) for a while as after a ride it vaporises water on contact

My standard can on my gsxr got very hot after even the shortest of runs. When I first got it back from the shop I bought it from (about 2 miles from my house) my daughter just tapped the exhaust with her knuckle, and it took the skin away. Luckily she only tapped it extremely lightly, and did not place her whole hand on it.

I got an aftermarket scorpion can which got nowhere near as hot as the standard can.

..amazing that in this country the standard exhaust would pass health and safety checks!

I had a security guard once come and find me in a shopping centre because I had parked the bike about 2 foot in front of the other cars in a pedestrianised area (well out of the way).

Apparently kids burn their hands on the exhausts when they touch them, serves 'em right I think.

My exhaust is covered by a nice shiny cowling type thing which gets hot but not boiling, trouble is the heat from it conducts through onto the bike frame so that parts of the bike (particularly round the seat) get really hot to touch.

On the upside, it does act as a handy under-seat heater. I'm just not entirely sure its supposed to do this though.

Engines typically have an combustion temperature of over 800 C. On a high performance engine set up to run rich, with a high compression ratio and super efficient exhaust scavenging, there can be plenty of fuel being burnt in the exhausts rather than in the cylinder. A typical grade of mild steel will be liquid at 1370 C.

Remember also that only around 30% of the heat generated by the engine is actually used to do useful work. The rest is dissipated through the cooling system and spat out through the exhaust. Even the muffler on a low performance bike gets hot enough to melt panniers, boots and skin.

Even after it gets out the back of the exhaust, the gas can still be as hot as 100 C. Exhausts also tend to be very thin, so heat up very quickly. Touching a downpipe even just perhaps 10 seconds after I'd started the engine (it was a 125 single and I was stupid) left me with a nice blister and a mark which took a couple of months to go away.
