Evening
I have just brought a 1999 Honda CG 125. Runs well but the so called 5 speed gearbox is only a 4 speed box with all gear changes being down instead of 1 up and 4 down. I've spoken to different people, who tell me that either it is a 'sports box' or the box is faulty. Has anyone come across a 'sports box' or is it a faulty box.
Thanks

If it's going down instead of up (is 1st gear one up?) there's been a major cockup. I'm not sure how you can arrange that on a CG as there is no linkage, just a gear lever connected to an input shaft.

A racing gearbox for the CG125?! Laughing

ive heard of some of the chineese copy honda cg engines of having this type of gear box but never a proper honda one so id imagine it was either a fault or there has been an engine change

'sports' box .... on a CG125 ???? Not something I have heard of before.

The CG, from what I recall, doesn't use a linkage and just has the gear lever attached directly to the gearshaft. This means that the gearbox should be one down, and the rest up! The fact that there is 'a gear missing' also points towards something amiss with the gearbox.

When you bought the bike.... did you get a test ride? Did the seller mention anything about the gearbox? If the bike was bought with a fault like this which the seller neglected to mention and wouldn't let you test ride, or..worse...told lies about....then the Sale of Goods act might be worth quoting to him along with words like 'refund'

Thumbs Down Problem

As above gear box has a fault , the direct shaft input to the gears is a simple set up, if it has only 4 gears then i suggest as above go back get money back. the fith gear on the cg is needed like all the rest if its missing then only worse probs are around the corner.

Q: did you check there is oil in the engine? as gears can get sticky/ difficult to engage when low or none!

Your "1st" gear is actually 2nd gear. So you must be pulling away in second all the time. The gearbox isn't going down past 2nd gear to neutral and 1st.

Must be a devil to pull away, lots of clutch slip.

When you go down to the lowest gear you can select, if you try to change down one more does the lever move down against the return spring like there's nothing there, or does it go solid?

You should have 1 down, thats first then a bit up is neutral and then after thats its 2nd, 3rd etc for each click. They wont be a sport box for a cg so got no idea why you got told that. Dout that you got a faulty gearbox its a cg they dont need oil or even a slight bit off attention to keep it in one piece.

I bet the gearlever has a heel back, and its probably an import, I have one. I'm trying to find out if it can be rebuilt the conventional way.
I suspect these gearboxes were made for countrys where people use sandles or barefeet. This "all down gearbox" was common on older honda's and a few Italian small bikes a pain, but they can be got used to.
I've just ordered a manual, so will have a look-see !

DON'T PANIC!!!!

I'm betting it's not f#cked at all, I have exactly this set-up on mine, it's not uncommon to have all four down, I asked a similar question on here and was told that they were made for the brazillian home market.

The only problem I've found with mine is whilst the acceleration's great the top end is worse then my mates 50cc moped.

Just to prove I'm not mad heres one I spotted on ebay the other day:

I'm not panicing!..I knew it wa supposed to be that way. The bike on your ebay link is the same as the one I have. They are actually made in Japan, at least the engine is. The only trouble is that I had to go out and buy a new CG, because it was for my daughter , and she couldn't handle the gears and the lack of electric start!
And I agree, crap top end. I have a bigger bike myself, but I stuck this wonky geared CG on my policy just to have a cheap milk and paper fetcher!
