Hi guys i just brought a gsxr 600 off ebay picked it up sunday. it had been sitting for about a month the guy said. i drove it home and it was ok a bit jerky in first and second gears but i thought it may be because it has been sitting for a month. i just washed it and left it for a while tryed to start it and it seems to be only running on 2 - 3 cylinders... i have to pull the throttle right open of it to start and it just sticks on about 2000rpm then it starts to kick in and splutter and when it revs up flames come out of the exhaust. i tryed to drive it but it dont want to move. any advice would be great please... i think i may have been knocked Sad

Did the guy not tell you what was wrong with the bike? It's probably the reason he was selling it in the first place.

In my very limited mechaincal experience of problem finding, my first port of call would be to strip and check the carbs.

Question him about the problem and see what he says.

It sounds extremely fishy. Did you see the R1 when you picked it up?

i agree with that is does sound a bit dodgy, the oh i got a new bike coming so gotta get rid is a common one for getting rid of a dodgy bike. How was it when you went to view it? or was this a blind purchase?

Has the bike got an aftermarket can on it? (or did it have one?)

If it's been sitting around for a while, I'd be tempted to drain the petrol out of the tank & carb bowls and give it some nice fresh petrol.

To test that it is running on all four cylinders I normally get a little water spray bottle and spray each of the down pipes in turn to see if I get steam.

If you get a chance, would be worth checking that all the spark plugs are sparking with a nice bright spark.

First i'd check the plugs then the leads, it just sounds like a misfire.

The guy's feedback suggests he's a genuine kind of fella. The bike looks mint and not obviously neglected.

Try to fire it up, run it for less than 10 seconds and check how many of the exhaust downtubes are warm.

The SRADs have 2 coils. Each has 2 plug leads. One coil serves plugs 1 and 4 (counting from the left sitting on the bike). The other serves 2 and 3. Sometimes people put the leads on 1/2 and 3/4, which is wrong. It would prove the guy to be a liar if it were like this.

Sounds like you need to check the plug in that cylinder first to see if your getting a spark.

How compentent are you with a screw driver and spanners?

What you need to do is to remove the spark plugs (keep the HT leads connected) & ground them against the engine block, turn the engine over to see if you get a spark.

Just out of interest where about's you based, if your local to Sussex I can come and give you a hand.

I'm guessing the spark plug is the cause of the problem (which would explain the flames out of the exhaust), can diagnose it simply by swapping the plug around with a working one.

If it is working OK, see if it's wet (i.e. getting fuel), if not going to need to clean the carbs.

Flames out the exhaust is unburnt fuel ignited in the exhaust. You say when you clean the plugs up it starts ok then after a while it stops firing on 1 cylinder, if you take the plug out of the misfiring cylinder is the plug choked up?
