Well, i've just fitted my 33bhp restrictors to my new (to me) yamaha thundercat. It was fun doing it, but sad in a way.

Firstly i removed the fairing panels, seat and ram air covers.

Then i took off the fuel tank, making sure i turned the fuel tap off before. After that i removed the air box and checked the air filter whilst it was off the bike.

I then had to drain the coolant fluid. Ever seen your bike take a piss? Laughing

Then i pushed the 33bhp restrictors into the rubber.

To be honest, it was a lot easier to do than i thought it would be. The hardest part was slackening the clamps on the cylinder head intake rubbers. They were really awkward to see, yet alone get to!

Ready to be re-assembled:

Hope you left the intake rubber clamps in an easier to get to position.

Have you ridden it yet?

I had the pleasure of doing that to my ZX6 when I brought it. What a shame the bike wouldn't run at all with them in, so out they came Cool .

How come you had to drain the coolant?

There was a hose coming from the coolant 'tub' going to the carbs and i needed to disconnect it to get enough movement in the carbs so i could get the to rubber bit to put the restrictors it....if that makes sense Laughing

Plus the haynes manual told me to

I havn't ridden the bike yet, still need to put the fuel tank and air box back on.

The intake rubber clamps are actually in the best position, but there still hard to get to.

its well bad that this has had to happen, mine had restrictors in but ran really really bad and was black smoking as the bloke who put them in didnt adjust the fuel and air ratio's so it was trying to put the same amount through. Hope you pass your test and can finally ride the beast. See how it gets on and decide what to do afterwards.

Nope. Just put the tank and air box back on and it started up 3rd time with a bit of choke. Knocked the choke off after 30 seconds and its idling exactly the same as it did before it was restricted. It revved freely and still sounds exactly the same. Also, no dodgy smoke coming out of the exhaust.

haven't ridden it yet, but i might ask my dad to go up and down the street just to see what its like at low revs. Although at the moment you cant tell its restricted.

When I had a restricted Thundercat, it would behave about the same until 5-6000rpm then it just wouldn't accelerate properly.

awwwww Sad
the hose going to the carbs is to prevent carb icing and keeps the carbs nice and warm in winter.

[/quote]Wait til you try it under load though. Hardly any power (read air/fuel mix) required for the engine just to turn its self over when revving.

i ridden my thundercat round on full power for a month, then the insurance wrote to me and asked me to get it restricted, do i did, soon as it came out of the shop, 10 mins later they were out.

went for a scream down the coastroad to make me feel better, and theres the mechanic that did it sat having a brew with his mrs at the side of the road... oops.

he laughed and that was about it.

this is what mine are used for now....

Went out for my first ride on it this afternoon.

I dont know what all the fuss is about Confused

It doesn't bog down at low revs, and i had it go up to at least 8k! No flat spots, just a smooth power delivery Cool

Because the most power bike i've ridden before this was a SR125 Embarassed , as far as i can tell it doesn't feel restricted. Although i'm sure i'll have a shock when they come out Shocked

I kinda of think of it like this-
Un-restricted it'll pull harder and harder through the range.
Restricted it'll reach a certain 'pulling power', then not pull any harder.

So, when you reach that point the bike would normally be giving you 34+bhp, it won't, instead it'll continue at 33bhp.

Another example; at 9,000rpm it might be making 40bhp normally, and accelerating faster. Whereas yours (and mine) will still only be making the horrid 33bhp and accelerating at the same rate as if held at 8,000rpm.

Now, I dunno how accurate I am. But that's certainly how it seemed. I got to ride my bike before its restriction, and after. and it appeared to make no difference till I hit 60/70mph,, and again a difference around the 6/7,000rpm mark.

the bike might seem relativley normal in the low-mid rev range, but as soon as you get to the higher rev ranger where most unrestricted bikes produce the vast majority of there power, it will be as flat as a fart and bog down, when i had my er5 restricted i could get it to the top of 3rd with a struggle and as soon as it got to 4th it would start to die and not rev anymore, if u ask me this cant be healthy for a high revving engine?
