Reading another thread made me think just how generous we are as a nation towards charities

Does anyone else on here donate, on a regular basis, to any charities ?
I myself have monthly direct debits for Amnesty International and Dogs Trust

What about donation boxes ? I always donate if it is related to cancer, kids, animals or the war
I guess personal events in ones life dictates what is prioritised as most worthy

I hate pushy collectors however, that shout at you, rattling their boxes, and shouting
Guaranteed not to get my attention

I also find myself wanting to sign up to more charities, but where would it end ?
I would have no wages left !

J xx

I used to have a DD set up years ago for the RSPCA but then things went down the pan and i couldnt even afford to pay it and my bank charged me £30 for missing £2. Rolling Eyes so i never set up a DD again, due to a serious lack of funds over the years. I do put money in the charity boxs when i have change or can afford that.

I am however suspious of where the money goes sometimes Confused

Like Dragonfly, i'm too suspicious and untrusting of those who collect for the charity boxes.

I do have one DD set up to give a couple quid a month to my local Banardos, but that's it.

I used to have one straight from wages to NSPCC, but I dont work, Im relying on myself and my savings at the moment, so I am my own charity at the moment.

I gave money for kids in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos when I was travelling, but there you can give £25 and it gets a child English education for a year! Money seems to go a little further!

I ONLY give to 'local' charities such as our Air ambulance ( never know when/if you'll need them), Hospice ( God forbid I get cancer but these people are the real stars, not those overpaid twats that kick a bag of wind around a field every Saturday) and the local Seal Sanctuary ( you seen the baby seals??? awwww bless 'em). as for Africa etc, lest all have a collection and send them a year's supply of condoms, that'll sort the money-grabbing feckers out, for sure.

i dont give. cant really explain why, i guess i believe charity begins at home, and i give if it affects me. always used to buy a poppy though, but more than that i would stop and chat to the old boys, their stories were worth more to me than the money i gave, and i guess my interest meant more to them, judging by the way they would react.

you dont see many of them around anymore, which is a crying shame.

trouble is these days charity is good business, and collecting for charities is even better business. be wary who you give to - there are lots of third parties collecting on behalf of "charities" and they only have to give a minimal percentage to the charity to operate legitimately.

but what really drives me mad is the salesmanship tactics that are now being employed.....all chuggers should be shot on sight! Twisted Evil

only time i've given to a charity recently was when my leather jacket was getting to heavy from the large amounts of change in my pockets, probably never been more then a few quid each time... not done many times...

I have DDs set up for the local RSPCA home and the NSPCC, only a couple of quid each but I don't notice it and every bit helps them.
I also give a fiver a month from my salary (plus the tax) to some other animal charity (can't remember which).

I'll give to some charities, air ambulance, NSPCC etc.

No chance of me giving a penny to an animal charity while it's needed elsewhere though.

OK I'm extremely biased here................

I donate my time to NABD. I also donate through payroll giving, mainly to see how it works. I do the wages at work and the charity accounts, so I see it from both angles.

If anybody wants to know how to set it up for work, pm me.

Cheers,

Byrnie.

I guess I donate to NABD when I go to their rallies. Oh and Air Ambulance is one charity that a lot of bikers I know support - so indirectly I give when being at said rallys.

(I'd forgotten about these)

I only give to charities i consider worthy. As much fun as donkeys are i'd rather give a crisp £20 to cancer care, something that has affected me as im sure it has all of you!

I used to work for a marketing company when i was about 17. Registered charities only have to give something like 18% of profit to that cause and your legal... How disgraceful is that! It took me half a day and i was out of there!

Agreed res.

I worked for concern for one day a few years ago. They pay there staff £7.50 an hour to canvas people out on the streers for DD's. Isnt that money better off going for charities that was well above the minim wage for anyone! (£4.20 was higest wage an hour then)

I'd only give to smaller local charities. Most of the bigger charities seem inefficient and aim to tackle too many problems at once.

I'd give to NABD or the ATC if I had to choose. I get the feeling they wouldn't waste the money and each pound would make more difference.
