All I need to know is do I have to screw the dipstick all the way in to take the reading or just dip it in to the thread and remove to read it.

Normally you screw them all the way in.

You are not meant to screw in the dipstick. You'll run the bike onto low oil if you are doing this.

Someone else will shortly come along to confirm, but if you don't know who to believe consider this: If you screw in the dipstick to check when you are not meant to, you will think there's more oil in than there really is. If you don't screw it in and you were meant to you will think there's less oil in than there really is and overfill it. I've never heard of anything damaging their engine by overfilling it with a bit too much oil, but you certainly won't do it any good by running it with too little.

Unscrew it, clean it, drop it back it and turn it anticlockwise a couple of turns, then take reading.

Usually taken when bike is perfectly upright.

Well you learn something new every day so it seems. Not that I intend to ever have a bike old enough to have a dipstick again but you never know. Wink

Sorry for the seemingly duff info m8. Karma
