The government are trying to sneak through a bill to put road tolls so you yes you can have the pleasure of paying £1.34 (min) per mile , looks like its time to emigrate.. considering my daily commute of 26 miles (sometimes 80 depending onthe office I am asked to work in) ,
on busy city roads (ie those which attract the highest tolls).

will cost me £34.84 a day, and I make around £50 (poorly paid) , I'd be better off on the dole.

Write your scummy MP ! , unless its labour , cus Labour MPs don't care and will ALWAYS vote whatever Blair says.

This will never happen. It's another one of those scaremongering stories that circulate from time to time.
It will be in MCN next week though Smile

I reckon it can happen too, but what about the tax on petrol, and vehicle licensing? Will we be expected to pay 3 lots of tax?

My family live in the Highlands of Scotland, where congestion is two cars on the same mile of tarmac. Will those roads be included? Eventually, yes, I bet they would.

The department’s long-term plan for reducing congestion is to introduce tolls of up to £1.34 a mile on the busiest roads. However, a national scheme will not be ready until 2015.

I think it is a way of them staggering the rush hour, basicly if you have ever been through places like glossop at 4pm and tehn 7pm theres a massive diff as at 7pm you actually move,
Its more likely (speculating here) that tolls will probbebly alternate depending on times and roads I guess,
It shouldnt affect bikers who preffer the twisty roads but it will no doubt cause a lot of non bikes to find alternate routs or just possible times.

Sheffield is hell in rush hour but not always through the day, the only jams here are caused by total confusion due them altering the one way system twice a month

Increasing taxation and costs has never worked to deter people from cars, what they don't seem to get is that people NEED to travel at these times. All it does is puts extra pressure on people who can just about afford it in the first place (like me!)

I wonder whether bikes would be included in the tolls, as they don’t cause congestion and can skip all the queues. If they do bring this in I can see a lot of people emigrating.

yup which causes more problems since all the brightest and those capable of leaving leave and leave behind a country full of chavs and low skill migrants.

which encourages those who were only thinking about leaving to leave, etc.

There might be an exclusion for bikes but then many people will ride bikes and the government will be keen to tap into this potentially massive source of revenue.

I would love to use my bike for work.
But i sometimes have to take new kit to sites so i have to have my car availalble at all times.

It will cost to much to go to work soon as i own the "dreaded" 4x4 and they want to slap £1800 a year road tax on that.

I'm getting bored with this government.....

Isn't this a rehash of the old chestnut were they were thinking of charging people different rates based on the time of day and/or length of journey.

Obviously the peak rate was mornings and evenings, just when everyone has to get to work/home or get the jids to/from school Rolling Eyes Brick Wall

I think the problem was putting the infrastructure in place to actually monitor the vehicles and distance travelled.

Sure it was a rehash which was meantioned AFTER the election , and considered universally unpopular , now some civil servant did us a great service and leaked it to the papers , such that NL will utterly deny this plan before the 2009 election , and say no we won't tax people to death

but afterwards will laugh and say suckers , bend over and grab yer ankles , and all of a sudden a tax will occur on lube.

thats the point the people who travel to work are a captive audience its like having a well in the middle of the desert and building a fort with machine guns to defend it , no matter what price the fort owner asks , people HAVE to pay it there is no choice,

calculating it clearly it just means the dole tipping point is incredibly high,

think about it:

£1.5K council tax
£1.5K av bills
33% tax (inc NI)

£8750 =commute 20 miles a day

=11750

What does this mean? , it means that anybody earning less than 20K will be better off on the dole.

If you consider petrol tax won't be cut (as if) VED won't be cut (as if) , nor will taxes go down anybody earning less than 30K won't have any incentive to work.

I've been reading fm a number of sources (like the Scotsman and here and MCN) that these are illegal to use in court because it's 'intrusive surveillance' and permission has to be obtained for such surveillance.

I'm sure a change in the law will follow, probably when no one is looking like after another 11 September or London's 7/7- a good day to release bad news.

Now I wouldn't mind this so called pay as you go system, as long as they get rid of road tax, and the huge tax on fuel!!!!.
As we are already paying, its like having a contract phone then buying a pay as you go to make calls!!!!.

thats BS and they know it , why? , people do things to avoid certain things ie they set off early thinking it will be a quicker trip , so more people set off early, which causes congestion at that earlier time.

Since the government makes less money due to this they make 7AM trips @ £1.34/mile , so people travel outside these times ,

Ditto with alternative routes though into the city there aren't any.

since people do this , the government makes less money and makes those times £1.34/mile , eventually 24/7 on each and every road will be £1.34.

Gahh, things like this make my blood boil. I honestly think the current government are out to make every "normal" person absolutely totally reliant on them. They seem to be gunning for a country where we're all living out of their back pocket, which of course is fuelled by us in the first place. So in effect we'll all be busting our asses at work to earn £0 per year in order to get £20k worth of benefits and "help", to make it look like they've done a great job of helping out the people who need it. Anyone seen Bean the movie? One giant prison. That comes in and I'm leaving for a country that's actually worth living in.

Hmm, I'm not the biggest fan of our government am I. Rant over Smile

Why oh why couldnt guy fawkes/ira have done the job properly Shocked

thats the plan to destroy all self sufficient systems in society ie families (ie transfering spouses personal allowance is not allowed anymore) , such that they have to rely on the state , while those who are singles and capable of leaving leave , which stores up bigger long term problems.

All these schemes will merely mean people will go around in and on unlicensed, un roadworthy, un insured vehicles more and more.

Many through necessity, and yes it is now a necessity for some people to use their vehicles.
