Another filtering question

Ok so you're nicley going up the 'middle' lane of slow moving traffic and a car pulls over to give you some more room, you courteousley acknowledge them and ride on through.
But after having a conversation with a fellow biker at work about this, he thought that cars that did this were sarcastically moving over emphercise the fact that you are dangerousley riding. Completley threw me this aspect and got me wondering if there was some truth in this.

A lot of cars do this if they are pissed with you they tend to try to block you.

its kinda hard to guess why they are moving over, sometimes i get the impression that they think im barging through, others i think they are being kind, or just making sure the learner coming round their outside doesnt damage their paintwork Razz

i have seen car drivers swerve infront of me when filtering (99% of the time its 4x4 drivers), i always find a way round so it doesnt bother me as much, so Ive always assumed they were being rude to me.

either way what does it matter? you get through and get out the jam a lot faster than you would in a car.

I'll always move over when I see a bike filtering towards me.

I do it to give the bike as much room, not to indicate dangerous riding.

If a drivers moves a little for me I always give a quick courteous wave as I am going passed, after all its only manners. Plus it means they are driving properly and actually observing the road and noticing me.

So I give them credit where its due! Smile

I usually nod in an obvious fashion once I'm safely past them - thanks to homocidal Pakistani Minicab drivers, I've learnt to keep my hands on the handlebars - preferably covering the brakes!

Even here in unfriendly London I find that the number of cars actively getting out of my way is far greater than those actively hindering me. The ones to watch are the frakking morons who just plain don't see me.

Just be careful in this wet weather, as stopping distances are even more crucial when you are surrounded by cages on all sides - I had a couple of hairy moments on the way home from work today.

I had a pair of denim jeans on, with a richa bike jacket (which is not that waterproof). Did affect my concentration a little but reducing my speed accounted for this.

Note to self: Get better gear! Cool

I've got some fully waterproof Bering textile trousers, but trying to put off wearing them for as long as possible - I hate wearing them when it's warm.

Wave them a "thank you" anyway.

If they have moved over to give you space or let you know they have seen you, they'll appreciate the courtesy of a thank you.

If they are being sarcastic it will piss them off Very Happy

Personally I think your workmate is being a tad over-cynical. Many car drivers are bikers too, and will move just a bit to let you know you've been spotted.

to me, everything else on the road is a moving hazard and i'll base my decisions on when to overtake and where to position myself on my own judgements and experience, end of.

i find if they move over quickly and look scared, its mainly because they didn't even relise a bike was there and have gotten a fright when they have seen you(i have done it my self) and move to the side, i don't think there is any reverse phycology going on, they move over so there car doesn't get scratched or they are being courtous.
just wave and be glad you are not having to worry about that particular car. Very Happy

I always move over to let bikes through as whats the point in sitting there in my car taking up the lane making it harder for fellow bikers to get through.

I normally get a nod or a wave as a thank you.

Being a biker has made me more aware of them in my car. I think everyone should have to do a CBT even if they dont want to ride after that.

I dont think its a way of saying oh your being dangerous by filtering at all i think its people being friendly towards bikers.

It seems to me to be courtesy, not anything else that makes some car drivers move over. The exception for me this morning was some twat on his mobile who didn't even know I was there and drifted out to the white line. It delayed me for all of two seconds whilst waiting for a gap in the oncoming traffic and then he got a 'hang up' signal followed by a signal asking if his sex life was conducted in solitude Mr. Green
