 |
|
As some of you know, I have a fairly young (3) staffie cross who can get a bit over-excited at times although he is mostly good.
Thing is, he hates anyone who looks unusual. He will go mental barking at anyone who approaches wearing a crash helmet (not good!) and he hates the postman with a vengeance.
This morning, because it was a warm day and I was in, the back door was open and he went for the postman yet again. He backs off at the last minute so I don't think the postie is in any serious danger but it shook him up a bit and I feel pretty bad.
It's not a major problem as usually the dog is in the house with the door locked (he is clever enough to be able to open it by himself if it's not locked) but I am wondering if, for my own protection from a potential court case and for the sake of the dog not doing something which would force me to have him put down, it is time to invest in one of those american-style post boxes at the front gate. And a new "dog on premises enter at own risk" sign as well - the dog ate the last one.........
Bloody dog. ____________________ Sod falling in love, I wanna fall in chocolate. |

Yeah that would be a good idea.
Its not very nice for the postie to be subjected to your dogs wrath You never know the dog might actually, complete his mission one of these days, and bite the poor bloke.
Imagine the hassle and upset that would bring you.
Better to be safe than sorry.
I dont know where you would get one of those postboxes from though, or how expensive they are. |

It's a fairly quiet residential culdesac and we're right at the end.
Wonder if I can arrange to collect my mail, ot have it delivered to my local post office (which is next door believe it or not ) instead? ____________________ Sod falling in love, I wanna fall in chocolate. |

hi.
It costs 57 quid a year for a PO box which would work for most mail. You would just need a bin for the junk mail.
Regards

The easy way would be to get a postbox fitted, the harder and perhaps safer way would be to get your postie on board and get your dog to 'like' him.
This would only be a matter of getting the postie to come in with a variety of your dogs bestest treats, chicken, hotdog, cheese, or whatever, and initially just throw it down and progress to offering it directly. You would have to have him on a long line initially to stop any accidents. Its probably a long slog, and quite hard unless the postie is fully onboard, and you can be bothered getting up everyday
Post box it is then ! |

problem with "beware of the dog" signs is that it's effectively admittance that your dog may be dangerous, and if it does bite someone, the sign can be used as evidence against you.
train and control the dog, but don't admit you can't control it and it's dangerous with a sign.

Those dogs look quite aggressive as well so I imagine the posty would sh!t himself.
You should be able to train him to not react to people so aggressively but warning sign is a good idea at least to remove the suprise/shock for the postman.
When I was doing a paper round as a lad I had endless trouble with dogs. There was a jack russel who could shred a copy of the sunday times in under 5 seconds. Two dobermans that would leap over a gate on a driveway and cirlce me menacingly as I put the paper through the door.
The best incident was when half asleep and hungover on a sunday morning. A dog(didn't get a good look) came smashing straight through the glass bottom panel of the door and into my legs nearly knocking me over! It must have been as shocked as me because by the time I had jumped up on the driveway wall in terror, it had bolted off down the road. Scared the shit out of me that did, it certainly woke me up. ____________________ GSXR600 |

Thanks for your ideas, some food for thought for me there.
I think it's the mailbag that sets him off.
He's not a particularly fierce dog usually, quite the opposite, and he's not very big. He just seems to have taken exception to delivery people and crash helmets.

Hopefully with some extra training we will get him more manageable. Thing is, in a way I'm kind of pleased that he defends our property as that's sort of his job, I just need to get him to be a bit less gung-ho about it! ____________________ Sod falling in love, I wanna fall in chocolate. |

wouldn't worry too much if he does bite the posty,
I believe posties are trained or at least educated on how to deal with problem hounds,
My uncle had an ex police dog that was delinquent, he bit two paper boys and a family friend (in the face almost taking her eye out) eventually the mutt was put down. but because the dog was on it's own property with a beware of the dog sign no legal action could be taken.
However to deal with the dog, how about intercepting the postie one morning, if you regularly have the same guy/girl is it worth getting them to be 'aquainted' to the dog, maybe he could pick up a dog treat by the front gate ready to great your dog?
Though caution should be aired here as if he bottles it, flinging dog treat as a defence, your dog will learn that chasing postie = food... not good.
I recently bought Roxie a 'Halti' head collar with link, She wear this on walks as shes taken to being aggressive to random people, children and dogs.
The head collar stops he reaching out and biting by closing her jaws.
Accompanied by my vocal response she's coming along nicely.
I got my headcollar for £5 off ebay compared to £10 in shops.
It will take your dog a while to adapt to the head collar, took roxie 2 weeks and she still occasionally throws a tantrum but the headcollar is yet to break despite her best efforts.
It's not a muzzle just an insurance.
