yes you can plaster over artex, infact i do this a lot in my job

you need to first knock of the high spots of artex then seal the artex with a unibond or pva solution the night before , you then need to apply a thin fast coat of bonding, this is a plaster wich sticks like shit to a blanket.

it is then ready for 2 coats of multi skim, the first is only a basic thickner and build coat while the second is the coat you will be trowling to a nice smooth flat fiish and saying good bye to the worst stuff ever invented for walls and ceilings.

Just be careful if you are going to chip any off, as some artex used to contain asbestos.

I believe there's a product available in B&Q that's specifically made for covering over artex.
Can't remember the name of the stuff right now, and also not used it myself, but it is available

I realise I've just been about as useful as a chocolate teapot, haven't I?? ... I'll get me coat Rolling Eyes

Don't bother trying to steam it off, the plaster underneath will more than likely be a complete mess. I spent weeks steaming artex off a wall in our lounge, then the plaster fell off Sad

We got a plasterer in who unibonded the ceiling (which also had artex all over it) and plastered this and all four walls. Did a fab job for £350 - far better than spending hours scraping. Thumbs Up

imagine if you plaster over the artex, and when you sell the house, the next owner artexes over your plaster.. and then the next new owner plasters over the artex.. and so on...

Wonder how long before you'd notice the change in room size Laughing

Slight thread highjack Embarassed

In my glorious 1970s ex-council property some bright spark decided in the past that woodchip on the ceilings, then painting it white was a great fashion statement. Will the same technique work to cover this? Sadly, given the state of the plaster board in the rooms I have tried the steamer on it's looking unlikely it'll steam off neatly.

Looking like I may well need to get a plasterer to come in and quote for redoing at least three or four walls Confused

Daz is the man, but I believe walls are a lot cheaper than ceilings and considering we had half the walls pretty much rendered (they were down to the brick) you shouldn't be looking at anything *too costly.

On the subject of artex and size, we've got a glorious arch (which incidentally is wonky) between two rooms that is covered in big spikey icing-cake artex it's almost dangerous to be near. Sick
