I do "something" to it every week.

Change oil every 2000 miles, haven't done it on the GS500 yet as I've only ridden about 1,000 on it

depends how old it is, newer ones get taken to the dealer for sheduled services mainly for the stamp in the service book though as i can do it myself. plus extra oil and filter after trackdays and long road trips, once theyve had the valve shimming done its home service all the way, oil and filter every 1000-2000 miles depending what ive been doing with it plugs as and when theyre needed check them at same intervals as oil Thumbs Up

I haven't got a set routine. Check the bike everynow and again, replace/service when I feel it's necessary.

I change the oil and filter every 3.5k like the manual says, sometimes sooner. And i will replace/do the other service items as the mileage gets higher. Bikes not old enough to need much doing to it as yet. Laughing

Only had the bike for 2 weeks, so I haven't had it long enough or put enough miles on it yet, but plan to change oil and filter myself every 3000 miles... brake pads as necessary etc.
I usually did all the basic maintenance on the car myself, so I intend to use the bike as a learning experience to teach myself about bike maintenance too. Such are the joys of having an uncle who was a professional mechanic.

Having said that the bike's due an MOT at the end of the month, but there's no obvious problems, and I've already checked over everything I can, so hoping it'll sail thru.

@ Stinkwheel (and any other GPZ owners), are there any specific things to check on a GPZ500 that I may have overlooked?? Thumbs Up

Oil and filter every 1k miles? What a complete and utter waste of money. Use a decent oil and change it every 4k, your bike will be fine Rolling Eyes

I do all my own servicing including a once yearly strip down and service that a lot of bike will never see in their lifetimes.

Cheers

I follow the service schedule which includes oil and filter changes every 1500 miles if the ambient temperature is less than 15 degrees C.

Otherwise its 5k between services. Probably the longest service interval of any bike I've had!

The R6 gets a Oil & filter change every other track day.

The CB-1 gets a service every three thousand miles, although it's coming up for a big service (e.g. valves etc..) which I normally check every 12-15k.

Having said that though it feels like I'm constantly working on the bikes every weekend.

This one puzzles me, services are as follows (in my manual)
4k or 6 months = check fixtures and fittings
8k or 12 months = above + oil and filter
Now as my bike was brand new I thought hey get the stamps but when I sold my old bike the dealer didn't even ask for the service book let alone wether it had been done/stamped.

I feel paying them £120 quid for a 6 month just to look at my bike appaling, so come Jan (6months) I will look at everything and tick the service book myself. Oil only needed changing once a year or as per milage in your manual so how come some of you are changing at 2-4k. I can understand track day people as you are stressing the oil and people with very old bikes but people with bikes less that 5 or 6 years old?

That's when you are suppoosed to change the oil on mine, every 3k miles with a filter every second change.

Dazbo666, nothing really specific. It is worth keeping a good eye on the rear shock, they get all sorts of crap thrown up off the road onto them and are prone to seizing. Also watch the pad levels on the rear disc brake, when they get low, one of the pads can be spat out.

i only change the oil that soon after a ive done a trackday on it, i dont care what the manual says, caining the nuts off the engine for a day is going to strain it a whole lot more than pootling around on the road plus that was on a bike with a slipper clutch that got really pissy if it didnt have nice oil in it. so actually no it wasnt a waste of money atall as it made the bike noticably nicer to ride Wink

Oil and filter every 4k miles. I've got the 12000 mile service coming up, so will take care of it myself. Far cheaper!!! Smile

And this Sunday I'll mainly be overhauling the front brake master cylinder and swapping out my tired standard brake lines for braided stainless. No sneaky trips to the pub THIS Sunday, then! Rolling Eyes

Do tappets and points when I feel like it. Fix stuff when it breaks. Oil gets changed roughly every 2k and filters if I can be arsed.

Wrong, you'd be surprised at how many things can go wrong or get worn inside a years riding (which is about 15k miles). My idea of a full strip down (in no particular order) is:

Brakes (pistons/seals out and clean, check discs)
Wheels (check bearings)
Headstock (check bearings and retighten)
Engine (oil and filter if due, coolant, balance carbs, general lube of all external moving parts)
Forks (oil change)
Shock (linkages check)
Swingarm (lube and check)
Air Filter (if due)
Plugs (if due)

Sometimes I clean it Mr. Green

Plus a general cable, bearing and other consumables check. This, IMO, is as important as changing the oil and filter, I like to know that my bike is in as good a shape as it can be. Ask yourself this, what shape are your rear shock linkages in? And the bushes? These keep your rear tyre in contact with the tarmac, that's why I like to know that they are in good shape. Same with fork oil etc

Now, if the person saying they change their oil every 1k miles had mentioned that was after a trackday, I would have been more in agreement.

Cheers

Grim

Unless your bike is some race tuned monster you can probably skip changing the oil filter every other time.
Not that they're especially expensive.
Don't skimp on the oil changes though.
Also spark plugs are recommended to be changed more often than really needed unless your bikes a single cylinder.
Air filters - in UK conditions again these can be still pristine at the recomended change interval which is for 'average' worldwide conditions - ie probably much dustier than here.

In response to the grim reaper...
Brakes (pistons/seals out and clean, check discs)
Strip calipers when the brakes start to bind too much to pass an mot. Never check discs because I couldn't afford to replace them if I found they were too thin.
Wheels (check bearings)
Replace them when the wheels start to wobble.
Headstock (check bearings and retighten)
Tighten when the bike starts to judder under braking
Engine (oil and filter if due, coolant, balance carbs, general lube of all external moving parts)
Replace coolant only when I have to drain it to access something that needs mending. Balance carbs when the bike starts to idle crap. Spray moving parts with wd40 when they start to seize.
Forks (oil change)
Replace if I notice the bike diving too much under braking
Shock (linkages check)
Never check, replace shocks if oil starts peeing out.
Swingarm (lube and check)
Never check. Plus on one bike the swinging arm bolt is seized in, and impossible to get grease to bearings with a greasegun. Still works fine though.
Air Filter (if due)
Replace when bike starts running wank.
Plugs (if due)
Replace when bike starts running wank, or I realise they've been in for twice the mileage designated in service schedule.

Sometimes I clean it
Never clean it.
