It's about time a politician had the balls to at least open a debate on topics like this. I'm even more pleased it was Straw, who has a large muslim constituency and is one of the few Labour politicians I've ever had a grudging respect for.

Quote:
Cabinet Minister Jack Straw has said he would prefer Muslim women not to wear veils which cover the face.

The Commons leader said he did not want to be "prescriptive" but he believed that covering people's faces could make community relations more difficult.

https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/5411954.stm

Naturally, the usual grandiosely titled (but tiny) muslim groups complained about an elected representative airing views that represent concerns shared by many of his fellow citizens:

Quote:

The Islamic Human Rights Commission called Mr Straw's views "astonishing" and accused him of discrimination.

The Protect-Hijab organisation said the "appalling" comments showed "a deep lack of understanding".

How is it discrimination?! Straw makes it clear that his problem is with the lack of face-to-face contact, not the religious or cultural reasons for it. I've no doubt that he would also insist that a bike or someone wearing a white pillow case with eye-holes cut out remove their face-coverings.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml;jsessionid=KF451S5EI2CJDQFIQMFSFFWAVCBQ0IV0?xml=/news/2006/10/06/uveil.xml

He goes even further in the above Telegraph story, suggesting (correctly in my opinion) that not having such barriers would help community relations.

Quote:

The Leader of the Commons’ latest comments followed his controversial call for Muslim women to remove their veils when they come to see him at his constituency office:

Asked whether he thought veils should be discarded completely, he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “Yes. It needs to be made clear I am not talking about being prescriptive but with all the caveats, yes, I would rather.”

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006/10/06/nveils106.xml

It's clear from his original comments that this is a firmly-held and well thought-through belief, and one that he pursues with a genuine interest in promoting better relations with Muslims. Fair play fella!

It effectively already is.

I've actually gone to the effort of emailing Jack Straw and suggesting that I'd vote for a Labour party led by him! I hate Labour, but I grow increasingly tired of the Tories' slip to the left, and the avoidance of any moral stand by Cameron.

Well done to Jack Straw for saying what everyone else thinks. But just watch how more common the veils become now. What is it with Muslims and critisism?? They dont like it do they. Shocked

No group with clout disproportionately large compared to its size is going to give up the opportunity to make use of our craven leaders to get what they want.

In many ways, Muslims are no different from any other minority. Unlike most other minorities however, they often identify with people, nations and movements who wish to bring about the end of our society and way of life. That we kow-tow to their wishes without an appreciation of the wider picture is a disgrace - and weakens our once-great (well, at least fair-to-middling) country.

I applaud Jack Straw, all I have heard today is about this issue. It appears that these days the muslims will complain about anything now, they are takin over the UK, lets face it, we all know that they are aiming to run the it, soon it will be us that are the minority, a scary thought but true Sad Why cant everyone just get along in the world, all these wars going on is down to politics and religion.

Having seen a few news articles on the box about this since getting home, it's telling (and extremely predictable) to note that the vast majority of Muslims interviewed seem keen to ignore his actual words (ie. that he explains his views and ASKS women how have specifically come to speak to him to remove their veils) and choose instead to believe that he is demanding that all Muslim women dance around the street naked for the amusement of the infidels.

Did you actually read all of the stories I posted, including the original article where he explains his thinking?

Regardless of whether you did or not, Straw is entitled to his opinion, entitled to voice it, and even one of the usually reactionary muslim groups says that it is reasonable to suggest that face-masks can be unsettling.

A lot of communication IS non-verbal - indeed many IPS 'experts' suggest that the majority is - and of that I'd bet a fairly substantial part is made up of assessing facial expressions. Anyone who hides those - for whatever reason - is denying their conversational partner the ability to really understand what they are saying, whether they mean it, and how strongly they feel about it.

It's also considered fucking rude in my culture - as evidenced by the many people on here who argue that we should remove our bash-hats when paying for petrol.

It's not like he is asking them to walk around like this all the time - he is ASKING that they show their face when THEY come to seek his assistance, in a controlled enviroment, some with their husband there, and all with a female member of staff as a chaperone.

I repeat - have you actually read the fucking stories I posted?

HE ISN'T MOANING, HE'S EXPRESSING HIS OPINION ON ISSUES THAT HE FEEL AFFECT COMMUNITY RELATIONS. THAT HE HAS FOUND WOMEN COMPLY WITH HIS SUGGESTIONS SHOWS THAT THERE IS SOME MERIT IN HIS IDEAS

Is it possible Jack Straw is having a quick populist moment while he gears up for the leadership challenge?

The left will talk the talk on racial matters but will shit it when it comes down to the crunch. This is because they couldn't give a fuck about us or our country, but they will try to get in again by using the problem they created as a vote getter. Labour are scum, they've fucked the country up to a point where there are riots, no-go areas for whites, a justice system which is a joke, no room in prisons and an impotent police force.

If you are traditionally a right winger at heart, don't be hoodwinked by labour lies. They are full of shit and will say anything to stay in power. Don't believe the hype and certaintly don't vote the cunts in again.

I would say it was extremely probable, rather than possible.

I've no intentions of voting for them - I merely emailed Straw to imply that I did, as any encouragement to air such views is a good idea imho.

Do you deliberately say the most stupid thing you can think of, for a giggle?

Brown is a nightmare, and what fucks me off the most is that you can trace dozens of our troops' deaths directly to him and his penny pinching ways.

Old Labour will get Reid in, then the trade unions will pull the strings and then that will be the end of Labour for another 20 years.

Radical politics are coming soon, I think.

This may indeed be the case, but ...

... if its a populist moment, then surely that gives weight to the principle that A HEFTY WEDGE OF THE POPULATION are fed up with Muslims trying to throw their cultural weight around, having overcontrived hissy fits about nonsensical issues, and that that same wedge of population actually do think its time that Muslims behaved more according to the customs of THIS culture, and not their own.

When we visit several of their countries, we aren't allowed to dress how we like. We have to dress how THEY want us to.

I mostly agree with Siggi on this subject, so far.

I completely agree with Jack Straw Thumbs Up

I was thinking about this a few weeks ago (slightly different angle), that when bikers buy petrol, they are expected to take their lid off when they pay. When I was going through China passport control the other week, I was asked to move my hand from my face so they could see me clearly.

I think the world is going PC mad if people take offence at Jack Straw's comments. He is just being practical.
