Some choose their own and other are given them. Apart from #1 it's random I think.

Quite a few of the numbers have a history behind them, for example Nicky Hayden has no. 69 as it is the number his father used when he raced.

Sounds legit, although it may have a subliminal message too Wink

No 1 is always reserved for the champ in most motor racing.

You're entitled to the number where you finished in the previous years championship....but...you don't have to have that number, you can pick a higher number if it's not being used but not a lower one than your finishing position.
That was how it used to be but dunno now, Mccoy was using 8 yesterday.

you choose what number you want-unless someone in the championship wants it (have priority due to finishing that place in championship from year before)

His dad was known for throwing his bike at the scenery a bit, so he had 69 as a joke so the number was the same which ever way up the bike was!

Rossi has 46 as it was the number his dad used when racing.

(will dig out some info on a few more when i get home tonight)

And Nicky Hayden also likes it because if you crash you can tell who it is easier cause its the same both ways, whether its upside down ot whatever!!!

saves the commentators guessing!!! Thumbs Up

They used to be handed out at each race until someone (I think it might of been Sheene and number 7) decided that they wanted to keep one number.
