What happens when you die?

Following on from the "do you believe in afterlife" thread
What happens when you die? Not to your body, That just gets burnt/buried/eaten, etc. What happens with your conscience?
I mean, one minute you are living and breathing, dreaming, thinking and such, the next you are not. Do you ever wonder if you will know you are dead? will you see what you are leaving behind or know how you died?
When someone dies after a long illness people always say its for the best, as its put an end to their suffering. How do we know? For all we know you may spend eternity suffering from what killed you.
If there is such a place as heaven, then what age will you be when (if) you go there? I imagine it would be very strange if you get there only to find you are older than your parents. Also will you still be able to recognise everyone?

You wont know what happens until you are dead, even then you wont be able to tell anyone since you will be dead.

One of those things that you will never know until it happens.

I like to believe that when I die loads of nice things will happen, but being a realist I am kind of expecting just to die and have no recollection of anything afterwards. In fact cause I am dead I wouldn't even be able to have "no recollection" cause I have no brain.

Asking this is like saying "How large is space?". Nobody knows. I tend to take the "Near-death experiences" with a pinch of salt. The people that tell them usually look a brick short of a house.

Technically though, you are only dead when you are brain dead, not when your heart stops. So once your dead, you brain is not functioning, voiding any thought at all, isn't it?

What about these people who claim to have lived other lives? There was a kid on the tv the other week. He would talk about "the other family" that he said he had lived with. He apparently give vivid descriptions of his other family.
Some people may visit a place and get an overwhelming feeling that they have lived there before.

But then there's the other one, we still don't know why the hell we are here. It's not like we made the universe so we can determine what happens to us like a clone, we just have to go on what we know. I think all these questions about life, why are we here etc. lead to the same answer which we don't yet know.

I keep thinking it would be silly to think you go on after life but then i think we still know little about it so it doesn't seem so.

When you die it will be the same as it was before you were born. Can you remember? Nope, because there was nothing...you never existed and so there nothing, not even a sense of time. When you die it will just be like that because you will not exist anymore.

As for the people saying they had lived other lives (reincarnation), if this was the case where everyone just dies and then is born into a new life then this cannot be. If that was so then the population would never increase, it would be the same as it was when humans first came to existence.

It is a nice to think though that there is an afterlife and that you will be reunited with your loved ones again in spirit form. But I think the origins of the belief of afterlife came from people's individual personalities. As people we all have our own personality and way of doing things. Take for example a person that is full of energy and is always doing things, they are funny and make people smile / laugh and then one day they get killed. Now this person is just lying there doing nothing, all quiet. This persons friends / family will think that his personality / spirit must live on and must have gone to the afterlife.
