Need something else to amuse myself with. Computer games are boring, can't be bothered to go to the cinema or rent a DVD and TV is just rubbish isn't it?

Last book I read was about 4 years ago Embarassed papillon I think. I hate stuff like Tom clancy, murdery mystery and psychology "getting into the mind of a killer" type rubbish. Quite fancy something on motorcycle touring, post apocolyptic or science fiction, things about nasty governments. Or just books that are good Smile

Question

I have just finished reading this:

The Code Book - The Secret History of Codes and Code-breaking

It is a good read that shows you the history of codes and encryption right from the begining (Julius Ceaser) to how Mary Queen of Scots used codes to communicate to plan her escape from imprisonment but which then led to her being beheaded. Also how the Enigma Cipher was cracked by the Polish and British in the second world war to modern day cryptography such as RSA and DES and the future of cryptography using quantum computers.

Of course it all depends if your into that stuff.

Also this book just came out (motorcycle adventure):

Race to Dakar by Charley Boorman

Have not read this yet but I am planning on buying it. Should be an interesting read! Thumbs Up

If you fancy something Tolkeinesque, Stephen Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, Unbeliever, and the second chronicles, were a good read IMHO.

Any Alfred Bester for 'classic' sci-fi that's still very readable today (possibly my favourite author).

Similarly Frank Herbert and the Dune series, now continued by his Son is definitely worth a read.

For modern Science fiction, I quite like Peter F Hamilton; a couple of his recent books/series (one two books, one three) have been epics to get your teeth into.

Also recently read 'Keeping it Real' by Justina Robson - wasn't amazing, but quite good in it's own way.

Always like Terry Practchet's discworld books for general 'light' reading.

Robert Rankin does some good 'English' humourus based Sci-Fi kinda stuff, but a little 'off the wall' for some.

Recently read 'Dead Air' by Iain Banks and quite liked a realistic sounding portrayal of English live in a non-glossy way.
Occasionaly like his sci-fi written under Iain M Banks.

You should check out Joyce, if you've got time on your hands.
Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man if you've got a little bit of time on your hands..

Ulysses if you've got a moderate amount of time on your hands,
and if you've got nothing to do for the next 50 years you should check out Finnegan's Wake Wink.

Beckett is good, too. How I love Irish literature.

*shudders* There's a series I couldn't get on with.

Irish and Russian literature, the two most depressing examples of sequenced language in existence. Rewarding though, it's like taking part in an "Iron Man" competition whilst sitting down ("I can do this, I can do this... FINISHED!").

For sci-fi check out Ian.M.Banks. Particularly the "Culture" series (well, they're mainly standalone books but all set within the same universe).

I've got Digital Fortress I think - personally I couldn't reccomend enough that you don't waste your time on any Dan Brown books.
I can't find the words to express how not-good I think they are, luckily I'm not an international best selling Author like Dan Brown, so people aren't going to be so disapoinited by my lack of literary skills Razz.

Qualifications wise I have a cycling proficiency certificate, 25m swimming medal oh and a picture of me on Chris Akabui's knee after doing the most pressups in year 6 Razz

I think so far its spot on, enough to get the old grey matter going but nothing too heavy right now.

nasty governments?

Robert Harris, Fatherland
George Orwell, 1984

post-apocolyptic sci-fi?

William Gibson, Neuromancer
Frank Herbert, Dune

books that are good?

I just finished reading Confederacy of Dunces and reckon it's worth a go. I've got a soft spot for umberto eco books, and The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana was pretty good, but I'd definitely recommend Foucault's Pendulum as the perfect antidote to all the dan brown bollix. Ian (M) Banks stuff is consistently readable. Other noteworthies are the bill borrows biography of alex higgins and will self's Grey Area.

Haven't read any books on motorcycle touring yet, but I might just line one up for my next read.
