i washed my bike last week and rode into work.
i stopped at some lights and a courier levelled up to me on the usual filthy 500cc bike with torn, mute coloured textiles and tank bag to match.

he looks, then says "too shiny" i turn my head and say "what?"
"too shiny mate"
"o.k................?" was my slow reply Rolling Eyes

we part company and i begin to laugh.

not only was this the first time a courier has spoken to me but he decided to take the piss by pointing out that my bike don't look like it's been dropped of a building and ridden into the Thames.

Fair play, Thumbs Up

is anyone here a courier and do you ever wash your bikes?
let's assume for now you don't so what do you do to keep them on the road and in working order?
they always look so caned yet they never seem to break down Confused

sorry if i jinx anyone Wink

BTW you guys ride like legends Thumbs Up Very Happy Thumbs Up

Generally that'll be because a courier would be more concerned with keeping the mechanical side of the bike running well, rather than wasting time cleaning & polishing it.

Downtime = loss of earnings.

yeah i get that but what's the deal with keeping the bike on the road 8-12 hours a day 5 days a week?

lube chain, check levels, make sure it's got fuel and fuck the rest?

well, the pizza mopeds are the worst, they thrash around on their n125 honda innova's and they commonly bounce over bumps with a height of up to a foot in the air (sparks an all), then come crashing back down with speeds of 35+, and cut ya up no end, with my NS125 OTR soon, i will show the b*stards who has power an b*lls...

Other than making damn sure it's a shaft drive, pretty much that. If you're on the bike 10+ hours a day then you get a good feel for when problems are starting, and so deal with them accordingly. Cleaning is pointless though, most bikes are trashed long before corrosion is a big problem.

It is a good idea to clean a bike to see if anythings come loose, Thats one of the only reasons why I clean my bike Very Happy

But lets face it, being a courier is a very hard job, I dont think I could be arsed to even look at my bike if I just done a horrible 12 hour shift sweeting my balls off or freezing them off. Let alone clean it!

I get the opposite effect with worn textiles and more often than not lots of luggage , I get couriers pulling up next to me sometimes saying hello , sometimes asking what company I work for (since I'm not a courier I don't have a company sticker on the side of me bike)

I have done a bit of dispatch riding, and now riding a fuckin 50cc pizza ped. My bike is a battered old 500. I do wonder when i pull up next to a shiney whatever, what the person likes about biking, is it the riding, the acceleration, the cornering? or just Washing and cleaning it, then posing by the side of it.

Whatever floats your boat though i guess.

I'd happily deliver pizza, but i've never found a place with anything other than mopeds rond here. In worthing and brighton, they used to have DT-125's, I wouldn't mind that so much.

ive got a dirty old 500 lol, well its not always dirty but it does get fucking clarted lol, should of seen it the other week covered in mud, and when i say covered i mean COVERED.

but i do clean my bike, but thats usualy before i do a little bit of work on it, i hate working on dirty bikes plus now winters on its way ive been rubbing the 2 stroke oil into it to stop it from rusting away before my eyes.

and i should imagine if ur job is to ride your bike all day you should be able to feel when somthing is on its way out, like im gonna need a new throtle cable soon, and i need to put the spacer that keeps the chain hitting the chain guard back on.

i dont know about other people but i can feel when theres something not right with my bike.

EDIT - just read that back to my self i wish my job was to ride my 500 twin all day like a nut case, id much prefer it to being a maintinance engineer, altho i do love my current job.
and saying that i wouldnt mind being a pizza delivary boy, i loved my MBK scooter lol was a right wheelie machine good round corners as well centre stand scraping at every round about no matter how small.

Never really understood that argument to be honest. If you're that worried about stuff coming loose, then once every couple of weeks go around the bike with a set of spanners checking everything's tight. Will take you far less time and effort than cleaning the bike, and will be far more effective at making sure important bolts are tight.

There was a thread about this just last week, and I posted a pic of my bike showing it in all its filthy glory. I deliberately don't clean my bike as a statement - Riding a rat fits in with my philosophy and lifestyle, however it also conveniently fits in with my laziness Smile Join the darkside people, it's much more fun and far less work!

if the last owner of ur bike looked after your bike as well as the last guy who owned my bike did i dont think ull have any thing to worry about when it comes to bolts falling out.....

mainly due to the fact that evey bolt and screw ive taken out of my bike ive had to use a screw extraction kit on as they were that rusted in lol

Do you have any idea what fun it is to out ride the shiny new bike brigade on a filthy, dirty P.O.S. ?

Why would I bother to clean a bike that I'm gonna throw away/put on ebay for rock bottom price in six months time?

incidently the work Bros400 will be in the for sale section later today. Laughing

Lets play a game. I'll take my shitheap KLE500 and someone take along their shiny, "cleaned every time I use it and once a week if I don't" bike.

We'll take it in turns to nominate a fastener that both parties have to remove from their bike. Spanners, sockets, allen keys and turnscrews only, no impact drivers or braces. First person to burr the head off one or snap it is the looser.

Dirty doesn't mean it's neglected. Clean doesn't mean it's well maintained.

Almost all couriers will bullshit though, nature of the breed Wink Still one of my favourite memories of the job, the tall stories getting slung around when it was quiet and we were ranked up waiting for a call.

Used to cry with laughter on a wednesday night on the way to the Waterman, ancient and scruffy XJ900 being ridden by a cordura wearing bloke with no attempt to climb around on the bike at all and still you'd see the racerep crowd trying to look like Rossi even as said XJ closed up on them.
