I'm trying to split cog heads old rieju's engine casings to get to the crank, but they wont split, i've tried prising them apart and beating them up with a leather and copper mallet, still no joy.

Has anyone got the answer?

We sold the bike but it came back seized, I thought a quick fix to free the piston and away we go.

Not that easy, the big end bearing has destroyed itself so it's a complete stripdown.

Hi

Think that is a Minarelli engine. Have an engine manual for the early Aprilia AF1 with a similar engine. In there they tell you to use a puller which (as far as I can tell) bolts to the n/s crankcase half and then pushes on the end of the crank. Used while "tapping the a wooden, leather or plastic hammer alternatly on the selector shaft and on the gearbox shaft".

All the best

Keith

Cheers Keith, I'll see what I can do, also should the flywheel come off easy cos this bugger wont shift either, have tried leavering it up while tapping the end of the spindle but no joy.

I hate this bike, you try and do the decent thing and get this shit.

Where's Cog Head I hear you say! In Wales with his bloody girlfriend, I hope he gets wet all the way home! Mr. Green

Hi

Don't think you can split the cases without removing the flywheel (and the ignition / charging system under it).

All the best

You might need a special tool to remove the flywheel. If you have a local friendly bike mechanic, they probably have one. If you take the engine down there, they'll probably whip it off for you for nowt (takes seconds if you have the right puller).

You could try screwing the rear wheel spindle down the central thread of the flywheel while someone holds the flywheel still. They are usually the same thread and this will often pop them off (they are just jammed down tight onto a tapered shaft).

You can sometimes get a 3-leg puller on them but be very careful not to damage the flywheel if you use one.

Once you have that off and are still struggling to split it, try on old fashioned trick which is to bung the whole engine in the oven until it is 'Jesus hot' (touch it with your bare hand to see if it is 'Jesus hot'). Then whip it out (welding gloves are useful at this point) and try again with your mallet.

Check VERY carefully that you have all the screws out, there could be a couple lurking under the flywheel or in odd places like just below where the barrels fit on the outside of the engine.

There is a very good chance that you have case-bolts under the flywheel. Buy a puller they are normally less than a tenner.
