How come the UK seems completely tailored to unemployed people?

logically employed people should have the most money to spend and
therefore if they have no opportunity to spend it they won't

Ie banks , shops (esp retail shops) are all open during 9-5 ie when
most working people are ... working, I've been unemployed for short
periods and you get very very very empty shops 9am in the morning.

Do shop keepers like their staff standing around doing very little at
these time periods?.

Recently I went to try get some tyres , and everywhere that did tyres
was open 9-5 week days , and 2-3 hours on a Saturday, eventually
going to an Indy tyre man who did my tyres as a one off 7pm jobbie.

Anybody else feel the same way?.

It suits the old fashioned "woman stays at home whilst the man works" style of living. I think the concept of a weekend should be wiped, instead a core of 3 days where everyone works (say Tuesday to Thursday) but the remaining 2 are staggered, giving everyone a chance to get what is currently crammed into a Saturday done. Staggered work times would help too - as long as (say) 10:30-3:30 is covered, who cares what time people start or finish? It would also make rush hour more bearable.

It's the likes of British Gas servicing that gets me - Mon-Fri, 9-5, so I have to take a day off work. If you are lucky they will give you an AM or PM indication of when they are going to turn up. Why no evening or Saturday or Sunday slots?

Why is it too, that all the women with kids in pushchairs and old grannies queue in the post office between 12 - 2pm. Is it on purpose to piss off the 'worker' who only has 1 hr for lunch...?

I don't think thats quite true. Only shop assistants do that kind of stuff and they do it over here too.

We have dealings with various companies in various industries in the US and you can't get them at all unless its between 9-5 monday to friday their time.

In Europe they work very late, but they also have about four hours off for lunch too.

The trouble is in this country is, to some extent we have to match the americans *and* the europeans which means we will have to work 24hrs. TBH I'd rather have difficulty getting a tyre on a saturday morning than have to work a night shift for no extra money.

could that not just be the office staff but the rest of the work are 24/7 due to more production
and not having to stop the machinery, I think that is more the way industry are looking
at things nowadays (just my opinion)

well, not everybody that shops in the day is umemployed, maybe they have some holiday time off work or something. But a lot of places are open at the weekends and they are packed, i work at argos and belive me it can get very busy in the week at times, but then there are times when its near empty but this can happen at the weekend as well. The 9-5 thing is well thats when people work, why should all the shop workers in the country work around office staff? The same could be said for office staff you only work 9-5 for the most part so us shop workers have to find away around that if we need you for anything. Then again these days a lot of shopping can be done on the net so you can use that as well, i think for a workable system that means the time most people can do shopping etc would mean a massive and fundermental change in the way everybody lives, which i dont think would be popular or even possiable.

An hour for lunch??? you lucky lucky bas*ard. In my 25 years of employment i've never been given a 1 hour lunch. Longest I ever had was a 42 minute break when I worked for Bae Systems.
Only get 30 mins these days.

Always something to do working in a shop during the day.

You'd be surprised how many people go shopping during the daytime as well, mainly the elderly and mum's/housewives, but plenty of student's and otehr assorted people.

OT: why are people given an hour for lunch in their jobs Confused

It takes me about 5 to 10 minutes to completely devour a lunch. And I could work at the same time if I was doing a desk based job, or sort a bit of paper work etc.

If its to give people a break it should be called a break not a lunch hour.

Wait until you've been working for more than a couple of years in an office environment, and then ask why.

Its called a lunch hour so you can have a hour for your lunch, some people have to leave there place of work to walk to the shop queue up walk back that takes time, even if you bring a packed lunch use the time to relax. people fought long and hard to get you these breaks,it doesnt matter if you can eat your lunch in 5-10 minutes you take the full hour

Aaargh, don't get me started! I need to register with a GP, and all the local ones are open 9-5pm, with a 2-3 hour break at lunch time. Most of them don't even operate an appointment system, so you'll have to turn up at 9am, queue with everybody else, then be given an appointment (possibly for the same day), and come back. What with the time it takes in London to commute, you might as well take the whole day off just for that 10-minute appointment.

5 to ten minutes? indigestion city...

They do say that people under the most stress eat quickly, and it doesn't do you any good. You should savour your food! Wink

long lunch breaks would drive me up the wall, i remember on my work experience all those years ago during school, that the whole office came to a stop and emptied while people went for lunch, i never understood then why people dont just sack it off and go home an hour earlier, and to this day my thinking is the same...

work is not an enjoyable place to be, let alone to consume food, so if there is a choice, i eat easy high energy things that can be done in a mouthful or whilst working

my current job has a 30 min lunch entitlement, but to take that basically means you pause your day for those 30 mins, and as a result you get home 30 mins later, i work every minute until finished, and just pen up the extra 30 mins on the end of the day for the sake of the timesheet

i do agree about screwy times though, utility companies especially as mentioned, a vital service goes down, water, gas, electricity (cable, lol) and they want to turn up 9-5 monday to friday to fix it for you, so you either take a day off work and waste it sat on the doorstep or it never gets fixed, ridiculous really
