I don't know if any of you have seen this months RiDE magazine yet, but in its centre section they have finally seen the light and realised the mythical and legendary status of the Chuck Norris of motorcycles.

A few more facts which can be added to the list of '98 R1 folklore:

Arrow The '98 R1 makes your eyes hurt when you ride it

Arrow The '98 R1 leaves you short of breath, short of saliva and short of anything resembling meaningful words

Arrow The '98 R1 is faster than Wayne Rainey's 1991 works GP bike

Arrow Sunday mornings were made for the original '98 R1

Arrow The '98 R1 is better than the church

Arrow All magazine articles on the '98 R1 are written in hushed tones

Arrow All pictures of the '98 R1 being ridden are wheelie shots

Yeah i noticed. Wonder if they got the idea from here. Laughing

Though they failed to mention that "a slight twist of the throttle alters your speed as required".

Confused So is this 98 R1 thing a biker thing, or a BCF thing? I was always under the impression that it originated here from Colin's test rides.

Did they write much about the poor front end and the tendancy to tuck the front when pushing hard at all? No? Load of wank then. It's a good bike, but not a great bike.

They wrote about the number of bikes that went end over end into a gravel trap or armco on their first trackday...

wash your mouth out with soap and water

an r6 may be fine on the track, but the 98 r1 is a better road bike in my opinion

i guess its personal taste but still

Sorry man, the 06 model is so friggin ugly, and is considered mediocre compared to the competition Wink '98 is an icon.

I know all bikes alter their speed by twisting the throttle, but if you are used to stuff like an rs125, or sports 600s which are tuned for high rev torque rather than low rev torque, the immense torque at low revs with a 98 r1 with just the slightest twist of the throttle does feel quite amazing.

Loads of bikes got more torque then a " 98 R1 " many are faster also, whats the big deal about it?
The 06 would be faster then it.

i believe i started it on bcf actually, you just satirised my gushing enthusiasm

although to be honest G started it on bcf as i tried out a 98 r1 because of all the times he mentioned the relative low rev torque between it and big twins

i had also read a book by some zany bike journo who used to be on tv which rated the 98 r1 as top when the book came out

but obviously what really started it was the 98 r1 itself which was so ahead of the game when it came out

a litre bike which handled like a 600 (or even better if you think about the triaxis stuff that lowers centre of gravity that is only now coming to 600s with the new kwak)
