 |
|
Right on the note of my impending trip to Scotland next year I am in the process of looking for some bike luggage equipment to purchase. Going to try and take advantage of the NEC bike show to get a good deal, but have seen this 3pc set on M and P for only £59.99.
Does it look good, does anybody have any other recommendations?

I think a tank bag should be your first purchase as having aftermarket bags attached to the back always has you in doubt, especially when you're on a budget.
Buffalo do a good tank bag which is very safe and comes with loads of straps and magnets. Crucially, it is also easy to detach.
Another great thing is that it has a detachable pouch at the front which you can detach when paying for petrol etc.
If you really don't want a tank bag, I would suggest spending a little extra and getting solid luggage. ____________________ Kawasaki ER6n -> Honda CBR600RR -> Honda VTR 1000 -> Moto Guzzi Norge 1200

I agree with feef, oxford first time panniers are perfect if you're on a budget- cheap (got mine for 35 quid on ebay, also from forest edge) and sturdy ____________________ "he who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man"- Dr. Johnson |

Well I don't necessarily require sports luggage. I only have a Bandit after all, which I guess is kind of geared towards touring anyway. I am quite vain when it comes to looks though. If it looks ghey I'd rather not take any more clothes. ____________________ Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. I 've toured scotland a few times on a CBR400rr with a tank bag (itwas a bit kak it had a permanent base and a zip off bag very secure but eventually the zip gave up) and a pair of panniers plus a tent + sleeping bag + sleeping mat. I used one pannier for clothes and undies and one pannier for shoes coats coleman petrol stove , paperbacks, food etc. The tank bag used to carry the stuff I didn't want to leave on the bike in a fort william pay and display (avoid the helensburgh arms!!). My point is whilst the GIVI stuff is probably great for regular commutes etc. or if you are staying in B&Bs the soft stuff gives you lots of options / flexibility. My worst moment was when my very cheap panniers (no brand) slipped over the end of my exhaust without me knowing ... I got beeped by a few car drivers i'd overtaken in Glencoe once too often so i pulled over to find out I'd incinerated half my clothes... the exhaust pipe had burnt its way in about 10""s and I had been trailing blue smoke for miles through glencoe - any way I stopped at Tyndrum and had to buy bottled water to put it out - I was too embarrassed to pull out a weeks worth of dirty keks and stamp on it in front of all the tourists at the the green welly stop ..still i must have looked a bit odd pouring evian into my panniers.
So panniers are good , honest, I got a cheap HGerricke tank bag with magnets that is fine and some second hand oxfords that are also cool - then did a Europe Tour with it all with no problems - deffo worth getting a few sets of the nylon luggage straps with the self-locking catches (Thule do some (& IKEA!!) & i've got some really thin rasta coloured ones) because you have absolute confidence things arent going to slip etc. if you route through all the available anchor points you have (unless you get really hammered - see Helensburgh arms above- and forget to put them on & set fire to your new hiking trousers)
p.s Ive got a VFR800i now and want advice on hard luggage - can i fit aluminium panniers to mine?? ____________________ DT50->KH125->RD250LC->CBR400RR ->VFR800Fi |

You'll probably find you don't need the tail pack with panniers and a tank bag. I have never needed to use all three and if necessary I do a Stinkwheel and strap any other larger items onto the back seat between the panniers using a cargo net ____________________ Avast! Pirates ahoy!

I think I've only used mine a handful of times, and usually for day trips rather than camping.
Mine has the advantage of having a zip-off bottom with rucksack straps underneath, and it is also the right shape for a helmet - good old Oxford ____________________ Avast! Pirates ahoy!
