A CBR600 will do you just fine until you get the experience to use an R1 properly. The CBR should keep up with an R1 just fine with normal sensible riding, just will take more effort. Do what you want though, don't be harangued into anything.

CBR600 is a plenty capable machine.

what reasons have your mates given you for going for an R1. How long have you, and they been riding for?

Don't be pushed into buying a bike you don't want. The CBR's a great bike, you'll need to use the gears more & might lose litre bikes on the straights but they're very nimble in the twisties. You'll get more out of riding a 600 immediately after your test. You need to get lots of on road experience & its better to do that riding a 600 to its full capacity ( if you can ) rather than tiptoeing on a more powerful bike.

Yeah the CBR is an excellent first bike, just try not to get rammed on insurance. For some bizarre reason Bennetts wanted £3k off me, as opposed to the £600 they want for a Thunderace. Confused

What everyone above says. It's definitely better to go for something like a 600 as a first "big" bike after a test pass, then when you've got a few more years' experience under your belt (and a few more years' no claims!) go for the big bike, if that's what you really want.

Get what you want to get, not what your mates tell you. You're the one riding the bike, not them!!

Mossy, a bike will only go as fast as you want it to. You can come a cropper on CBR600 easily enough: You can come a cropper on a litre bike like an R1 even easier. The amount of power the R1 puts through the rear wheel is awsome and can get you in trouble in an instant.

I would say, ignore your mates and get what you want and feel happy with. Whatever you get take it easy and enjoy it.

yes i think youre making the right decision getting the 600. A mate of mine who is 25 is not even able to get insurance on an R1-hes held a full license since he was 17 with NCB for every year, yet the only company who would offer him insurance wanted jus shy of £2200. Sad

I just passed my das a few weeks ago, and bought myself a cbr600, its an older one though but powerfull(100bhp).

And its as sweet as a nut, well pleased with.

So go for a cbr, dont spend too much on one, as it is your 1st.

Good luck in choosing.

Baz. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

aslong as you are sensible, the r1 will probably be easier to use

but you might have more fun on the 600 from revving it and keeping it in the powerband

i think its a longer reach on an r1 so better suited to someone taller but i could be wrong

I agree, all you need to do on the R1 is twist the throttle to get to the required speed.

i used that phrase because an r1 is far more responsive to changes in throttle position than less powerful bikes

yes i know that all bikes change speed by altering the throttle, but with the r1 (and probably all litre bikes) the throttle is much more sensitive

get it now ?
