Extended warranty

Shall I get one?

When I bought my bike, I was offered an extended warranty from a third party outfit for about £350. It's a bit like insurance. I didn't take it. A few weeks afterwards, Kawasaki launched Warranty Plus - which allows you an extended warranty and can be bought at any time in the first year. It's also considerably cheaper at £165 for two extra years. So, I still have the option to buy it, which extends the manufacturers warranty into years 3/4 with exactly the same benefits as the original two-year warranty. The only potential downside would be that I have to have Kawasaki dealer servicing - however I'd do that anyway. Kawasaki only have mileage based servicing so that will be perhaps once every 18 months for me. I can only buy this warranty in the first 12 months of ownership - which gives me a fortnight to decide.

Would you? What can go wrong on a bike and how much would it cost to fix? My car blew it's engine 6 months out of warranty, which cost me over £3,000. I'd have loved an extended warranty on that!

Extended warranties are almost always not worth the piece of toilet paper they come written on. I say that if it hasn't gone wrong in the first 12 months due to manufacturer/dodgy component failure then it's going to last you for a lot longer. also, anything that has a hard sold extended warranty "obviously has some kind of design flaw if thy don't give the warentee away for free..." .

Don't bother. Most Ex.Warrenties are usually squirmed or otherwise wriggled out of by the companies providing them and you'll only have to fix it yourself, so don't bother paying them the cash...

I didn't buy the "aftermarket" one, but the one from Kawasaki themselves (which extends the original manufacturer's warranty to 4 years, for 3% of the RRP of the bike and is transferrable when selling) for is tempting me - especially after my car experience.

I'm interested in kawasaki's extended warranty too, but to be fair, it only covers for manufacturing defects... surely any would have become apparent in two years, which i estimate to be about 30000 miles
